Plenty of stuff goes missing from checked luggage. Wrapping it acts as a disincentive for the baggage handlers to mess with it, they'll go for the easier option that is only a few seconds to open, rummage, and then close up.
A friend also used to do it each time as their insurance company would cover the cost of the wrapping. (Probably for the same reasons as above.)
I never got why people put expensive stuff (iPads, cameras, etc) in checked luggage though.
