• Hopefully this won't be regarded as spam. My friend and forum member @Ted_Lancaster has designed what I think is really a great product that deserves t0 succeed and which I think will appeal to a lot of people on here - bike packers, day trippers, randonneurs, campers, festival goers, hikers, and anyone else that can use a brilliantly designed, environmentally friendly, light weight fold-away cup. It's not hard to imagine @hippy, for example, slaking his considerable thirst from a Shimcup after he has hauled his slender frame over a humpback bridge.
I've seen and used the Shimcup myself and it's kind of magical; you'd never think it would work the way it does but it does.
Ed's at the fundraising stage - he needs money to scale up and begin production. I've linked to his website and twitter and to his indiegogo.
Thanks for reading and I really hope that a lot of you see how clever and superbly designed the Shimcup is and want to invest.

  • @Velocio; hope this is ok and that it's in the correct forum? Cheers

  • I just ordered one. I’ve been using folding silicone cups but my dog keeps chewing them up. I can’t wait to see her try and chew one of these!

  • Unsolicited advice: a video showing how the flat thing becomes a cup would be so helpful. It's hard to picture how it works.

  • Thanks. I should point out of course that it's a fundraiser so production is dependent on raising enough money but @Ted_Lancaster is better placed than me to explain that side of things and answer any questions you have. We are trying to spread the word so if anyone knows anyone famous who would like it - tell them!

  • I agree about the video - I'll get Ed on to it.
It's a really simple and ingenious design and the first time Ed showed me I was the same - how can that work? So, yeh, a demo would be good.

  • I only say that because when I saw it flat I was like naaah, how?? Looks ingenious

  • One thing about this forum is we probably don't need to explain what a shim is. The cup's made to tiny, tiny tolerances which allows the metal to fold and creates a perfect seal.

  • I think it actually uses an inverse shim, otherwise it would leak.

  • Boom. Was waiting for someone to say it!

  • @WillMelling thanks for posting buddy!

@ough A few people have asked for a video of it being assembled - the reason I haven't published one is because, although the design is patented and registered here in the UK, there is a risk that it could be copied before a production is completed, which could become problematic overseas. But I totally know what you mean!

If you go onto the crowdfunding page, which Will has linked in his post (or instagram - @shim_cup), there is a short video. In the middle section of that video (starting at 0:26) there is a series of studio shots against a dark background - these are the consecutive stages of assembly from flat to cup.

  • I can confirm it does indeed use an inverse shim. Otherwise it wouldn't fit, and would therefore leak.

  • in for one - looks nifty =]

  • Same, it looks incredible

  • It's not hard to imagine @hippy, for example, slaking his considerable thirst from a Shimcup after he has hauled his slender frame over a humpback bridge.

"We're gonna need a bigger cup!"

  • After multiple requests I've now posted a video on Insta which shows the assembly process. And an Aeropress. And a cat called Luna. Enjoy!

Tell everyone you've ever met in your life! Please and thank you.

  • Looks very cool. But doesn't your hot drink cool down too quickly? I think I want one anyway.

  • I backed for a couple of these, is there any update? Haven't had a response to any messages, just wondering what's happening

  • I backed this too, but haven’t heard anything since February.

  • I will PM you both.

  • ^ me too please =]
Looking forward to using - bikepacking the way of the roses in August
