• So I got GRX Shifters instead of ultegra as the consensus was that the shape was nicer.

I think the shape is good, but what I don't like, and didn't expect, is the ridges on the hood rubbers. I can see them being ideal for extra grip on day rides off road where you're wearing gloves, but my plan is to use them on ultra races where I mostly don't wear gloves and am a bit worried about them ripping my skin off after a few days.

Someone said that there are aftermarket replacements but I haven't been able find any non shimano ones. I'm going there might be smooth ones that would fit, anyone know of any?

  • I didn't like them to begin with, and they did rip my skin off. But few thousand hours on them am fine no gloves and don't notice the ridge.

  • i saw someone on insta using a stanley knife to just cut down the ridges a bit

  • I think @giofox mentioned this a long while back in the gravel thread.

I don't really notice them but I normally run gloves though. Why wouldn't you wear gloves?

If they really became an issue, I'd get a scalpel and shave them off.

  • As Hippy said, I too had your same thoughts at the beginning. I don't really notice them anymore recently. I ride gloveless as soon as it warmer than 10 degrees, all offroad. They do rip my skin off a bit in the first long rides after winter when the hads come out of the gloves, but after that I don't have issues generally. Still believe Ultegra R8000 are better.

tl;dr: The hoods are specific for those levers and you can't replace them easily, get used to them, they are useless, but there they are. Also, on ultras I am sure you have more hand positions in mind anyway.
