Fledgling blackbird just smashed itself right into one of my back windows. I really hope it doesn’t die.

Blackbird appears to have lived to fly another day. Hopefully not into another window tho. Particularly sad to see the male blackbird fly up to it with a mouthful of food, which it was in no state to eat. They’ve been nesting in the bush at the back of our garden, so it would have been a real blow if it had died.

2 Swifts yesterday, very high up, 2 or 3 today as well. Quite pleased, as I haven't seen any for several years so was beginning to think they'd abandoned North and East London all together

I could never see them when I lived in Hackney/East Ham, I think I saw that 2 one year and that was it. More bird life where I am now as close to Epping Forest proper, but I find Swifts really evocative as I remember seeing loads of them (along with Swallows and various Martins) when in the garden/park/by the river as a kid, so found myself really wanting to see them again.

Last night at Rye Harbour I was kept awake by nocturnal cuckoo and a booming Bittern. It made me wonder what the chances of the mournful lovelorn heron were of finding a mate, considering they're hardly common. I do hope the poor bugger got laid for his own sake as well as for the survival of the species in the UK. It is a quite amazing sound.

How weekend nights have changed, just back from standing in the dark in the woods enjoying woodcock, tawny owl and nightjar along with the odd bat
Cuckoo's, spotted flycatcher, redstart and meadow pipit the pre dusk supporting cast and willow warbler, so many willow warbler this year

Was in Oxfordshire last weekend and the kites were dive-bombing people for their pizza. They've gotten a lot bolder since I left the area.

In Northern Cyprus, found this Great Tit chick lying on the path about to be devoured by ants. Took it in and built a crude nest for it, spent a lot of the next few days catching and feeding it insects and catching and getting rid of its 'poo bags'. When ready, took it outside checked it was starting to hop about and flap its wings when its parents appeared and started feeding it and guarding it. Eventually saw it become fully fledged and independent - felt so worthwhile - amazing feeling!

Just had a close encounter with a kite - we had just put a bowl of crisps on the table in the garden, two of us sitting at the table and a kite came down and grabbed a claw-full of lightly salted crisps and flew off. They’re huge things and quite a whoosh of air.

I had that with a kite in a pub in the Chilterns who grabbed a slice of margarita from my hand and flew off.
The pub did have warning signs but no preventative advice...

Seen pictures of people who put chicken drumsticks on their bird tables for the kites, ridiculous when you see them swooping in

Talons are not the best for light salted bar snacks unfortunately.

I think we are seeing why kites have been persecuted through history. It all starts off fine when RSPB do-gooders are reintroducing a couple of breeding pairs to the Chilterns... fast forward 30 years and there are legions of aerial thiefs stealing pizzas and crisps... this may not go down well with Joe Public :(
In other news I was at Goring lock very early yesterday morning, spent a lovely 20 minutes watching a kingfisher fishing just below the bridge
Watched crows and curlew mobbing a raven today, 10/10 would watch again
