  • Woah, that’s cheaper than I was expecting. Some flash cards and off we go right?

Looks that way, along with a card reader for the iPad, don't think the older cameras can be directly connected to a device.

  • Perfect

  • I have a Lumix DMC-LX3 if a point and shoot is needed. Let me know if you want it.

  • Sorry, I'm probably being dense here, but what's the camera?

I had similar issues with mine (nikon D750) and found some tutorials online about what to do... basic suggestion was try using some kind of air blower thing (not a hairdryer!) and then if that didn't work, use a very fine makeup brush to brush the sensor. The first option didn't work for me, and I had trouble finding the right kind of makeup brush (eyeliner brush? Sorry, makeup isn't really my thing!) so ended up just using something else to brush the sensor clean (some soft tissue paper if I remember correctly) and that worked for me.

  • I used to use Canon but went to sony for the client friendly MP but in the hand usability the Canon wins hands down, they are so much nicer to use handheld but most of my work is tethered to a computer and with the camera on the back of a Cambo view camera so it's just used like a digital back.
Still have some nice lenses like a TS-E 90 and the 100mm macro but i need to shift them as i haven't used them in years.
would maybe go back to Canon one day as the Sony menu's are not exactly intuitive.

  • Noted. Will chat about it this weekend and see what the deal is, it’s very likely to be a passing phase….

  • Bear in mind that the photography might end up being more video recording/tiktok/youtube, so worth getting something with a tilty/flippy screen, records video, and has wifi or Bluetooth for easier downloading to the iPad.

Also being easy to use and carry around will be more important than full frame image quality.

    Something like this:

    Panasonic GX800
12-32 zoom lens, flippy selfie screen, 4K video, wifi.
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225564841167?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=l9uLOxvgR7W&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=C9GEWUovT8q&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Maybe not quite as nice image quality as a full frame sensor, but many generations newer, about a quarter of the weight and size. Also image stabilisation, 4K video, better rear screen, newer operating system and menus.

  • Agree, you'll take more pictures if you carry a compact vs (d)SLR. Although the Canon 40mm pancake (or any other pancake) will give you a reduction in size with a very sharp image.

on the flip-screen side you might find older gens of the Canon G7 X p.e. you might find around that price range in 2nd hand market.

Personally, I don't leave my compact at home... love it.

  • "with the camera on the back of a Cambo view camera so it's just used like a digital back"

    • I'd be interested in knowing more about this if you could take the time to explain it.
  • He means that he uses the camera in a studio setting in a Cambo studio stand.
Stationary, no handheld, tethered to station.

  • Pretty much as Fabzzz says.
    Looks like this :

But I do take it on location a fair bit as it’s quite compact.

  • I have not seen this set up before. I am very impressed. Thank you both.

  • Canon mirrorless cameras. M vs R series; what’s the difference and for someone coming from a mid range Canon Dxx DSLR is there a better option? Reason for change is to reduce carry weight of the body and to keep using the same glass, but open to selling everything and buying afresh for a new system (although the quote for 2x dslr bodies and 4x lenses from MPB only just covered the stand alone mirrorless body!)

  • Looking to jump back into digital after a while out ... I'm leaving my ageing Nikon F-mount stuff behind and considering something new in the enthusiast category, so around €1000-€1500 for body and a decent prime or fixed aperture zoom.

More than anything, size is my deciding factor ... I don't carry my D700 with me as it is far too big. I'm interested in the Fuji X system but wary of the smaller sensor size. Any good?

Also, I have zero interest in video, so stills-focused bodies/features only.

Also also, if it can take M-mount lenses via an adaptor all the better, as I have some nice Voigtlander lenses for my Leica M6 that I'd love to use.

  • I moved from Nikon to Fuji when the first X-Pro came out precisely for the size reasons.

Mounting M-mount glass with an adaptor is easy and there’s a selection of adapters available. Voigtlander also makes some nice Fuji-specific glass with contacts - I particularly like the 23mm, quite curious about the forthcoming 27mm.

If you want to keep it small you’re best looking at the f2 ‘Fujicrons’ - they’re sharp and focus quickly and very good glass. Some of the faster glass is also lovely but I felt like I was losing all the size benefits using it.

For my purposes at least the sensor size has been fine. I think @photoben uses it professionally so he’s in a good position to comment.

  • Ha! If I could afford a Q, I'd be buying an M10 and using my M-mount glass.

    Unless you can find me a Q for 1000€ ... ?

  • Has the Ricoh gr III always been 999£ new...? Was thinking about swapping my xpro2 for one as I find the x pro2 a bit bulky for everyday stuff.

  • Bit of a longshot - would anyone be interested in swapping my Fuji XF16mm F2.8 WR for a XF27mm F2.8 WR?

  • ha! fair, just get it done once IMO, get an M10 if you already have Leica glass.

  • Surely an IPhone 14 is enough? :-p

Someone did actually come up with a concept for a phone with an m-mount

  • Surely an IPhone 14 is enough? :-p

    100%

this is why my GRIIIX, X100V are gathering dust all cameras are pointless when the phone is this good

  • I haven't used an iphone in about a decade and as much as I like the camera on my Pixel 7 Pro, it looks great on the Pixel and like AI mush anywhere else. Is that the case with other phones?

  • nah thats about right, but who cares? no editing or selecting and eventually everything ends up on internet for which phones are the easiest to upload from
