Turbo Trainer Advice

  • I don't commute any more so spend a lot of time on turbo trainers. I'm trying to get rid of the Computrainer and maybe Fluid trainer but no one is interested. Oh well, they'll probably outlast all this Wahoo/Zwift shenanigans.

  • I have three flat mates(aged 37, 9 and 4) who are annoying as fuck and take up a lot my free time with frivolous nonsense.
An hour on the turbo in the morning before they get up and ruin my day would help me get towards my goal of being slightly less fat. That's all I want.

But I've just realised the Zwift hub doesn't have an xdr freehub released yet? I'm starting to think it's just not meant to be.

  • Flatmates, code for "fertilizer".

I normally do turbo in my lunch break.

  • my lunch break

Although I don't have a turbo, so I go use a Wattbike at the local gym.

If we ever do our big flat refurb then we'll be putting in some proper soundproofing between the floors to try and make sure it's not noisy for downstairs neighbour, and then I'll get a second hand Wattbike Atom (smaller footprint than bike on turbo).

  • I'd like to start going to the gym in the mornings again but I need to find a trainer that doesn't cost the earth and I've got other stuff going on. I'd never go to ride a bike though, eeeeew.

I've got those big tiles underneath my setup for sound and sweat catching.

I'd never get a wattbike - I love swapping bikes on the turbo depending on which event is coming up.

  • My usual setup. Fan is a cheapo thing from Robert Dyas, works just enough for a ~45 minute Zwift session.

  • My setup isn't quite as slick but it does the job

  • I think this has just been thrown out, so Zwift are in the clear.

  • Reading through all the thread, is there a clear winner on what should one get for an indoor turbo trainer? Thinking Tacx but it is rather bulky. I do like wahoo and swift new design but if they're going to fold then should one look elsewhere?

  • I have an Elite Suito. For my purposes (smart trainer, not super bothered about super high resistance) it's been good.

  • So far Wahoo has been more reliable for me. Had a first gen Tacx flux with the belt and clearance issues, it also had connection issues and just before binning it, it gave me a HUGE electric shock from touching the flywheel. Wahoo kickr v5 with direct connection has been better. It's much better at holding a set power on ERG mode, which does mean it's quicker to spiral if you let the cadence drop, but you get used to it.

  • Elite Suito is (or was) the smallest folded up. But it's still a heavy job which I avoid.

  • It seem slike Wahoo have been saved for now with an injection of cash from investors:

diversifying the breadth of its offerings to better support athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

This seems to me like the cause of their troubles, buying speedplay and developing virtual platforms etc. Surely they should focus on the core products again?

  • Does anyone have any experience with elite e-motion rollers? I bought a set off eBay listed as (B+) IE Bluetooth, but they are ‘just’ ANT+.

However, I can’t get the ant+ signal to pick up on either of my Garmins (520 and 530) so have no way of adjusting the resistance.

I also bought a 4iii viiiva HR monitor that is supposed to convert ANT+ to Bluetooth, but I can’t get the 4iii app on my iPhone to find that!

Ideally I want the floaty rollers to work with Zwift like the Arion B+ rollers I hoped they’d replace. If I can just find a way to adjust rhe resistance manually though, I’d accept it…

Any help hugely appreciated, but I appreciate I’m in a pretty small cohort here…

  • Kickr climb, anyone use one?
    Load of bollox? Stupid gimmick?

Rrp is obviously ridiculous, hard to see anyone paying that.
I’ve been offered one brand new really cheap. I’ve turned my nose at it previously tbh, but slightly tempted with the cheap price.

Edit - what I’m really asking is does it actually activate the different muscles used in real climbing? If it really does then I can see the appeal.

  • I've used one in a virtual hillclimb competition and it didn't feel any more like climbing a hill. Just distracting.

I would much rather have a way of moving the bike in the L/R tilt axis, with one of those platforms. Haven't got round to this and it would take up even more room, but have been experimenting with allowing a bit of movement by padding the feet with foam rubber.

I think this makes it a bit more like climbing at high power/low cadence. And at least in my case, stops me going numb for a bit longer.

  • Yeah the froth about them going under turned out to be bollocks.

  • it didn't feel any more like climbing a hill. Just distracting.

Thanks, this is my worry that it just becomes something slightly annoying rather than an actual benefit.
I’d ideally try one before committing but think I’ll give it a miss.

  • Anyone wanting to shift a Lemond Revolution?

  • Sorry for the dumb question.
Has anyone managed to get a track axle to fit ond of those old tacx turbos? My axles (the distance between the nuts) have always been too narrow to get clamped into the system therefore causing major instability and resulting in an indoor crash.

  • Considering doing my HC intervals with the front wheel blocked up to simulate appropriate gradient. There might be some physiological benefit, specificity etc, and I’m sure won’t hurt. More than it’s supposed to. Wooden blocks are cheaper than a KLMB

  • Didnt someone on here build their own sort of wheel raising doodad?

    I came here to ask:
Does anyone have a free zwift/trainer road code? Friend has just started the joy of turbo training.

  • Well I've caved and said I'll take it since it's so cheap. If its shite, I'll punt it on ebay.

  • I came back here to ask the same thing. I'm about to set up the 2 week free trial on zwift.
In the interest of being a really tight bastard, is there a way to pay less that the £12.99 per month?
Do discount codes for zwift exist?
