  • Any recommendations for where to get my old quad 303 and 33 refurbed and recapped etc.

Ideally I’d ship them out as I’m up in Leeds.

I’m not really an audiophile but I found the sound pleasing and I’d like to build-in some future-proofing.

  • I assume they mean ignore built-in Bluetooth and usb. You'll get an amp that's cheaper and lasts longer.

Then add a Bluetooth receiver or wiim mini or whatever

Not used them for repairs but guy was a good egg over email. They usually have a few Quads in stock.

  • what else do I need to buy to get my tablet connected to an amp?

Depends on the tablet, mine has 3.5mm 🎧 jack, so just a 3.5mm to RCA/Phono Y cable would do

  • Thank you all so much.
At my price level I'm looking at the Yamaha linked above, which has Bluetooth, and the Cambridge Audio AXA 25, which has usb charging only (perfect) and an aux input jack on the front (just checked my tablet @gbj_tester , it has headphone jack)
I'm swaying towards the Cambridge with the JBL speakers, at the moment.
    Indecision reigns!

  • These also are well regarded..

  • I know it shouldn't matter, but it does, I couldn't live with one of those nobsound/fosi amps just because of their appearance.

Found a CA AXA 25 on eBay for £170 posted (ex display, but never used) which will free up a bit of budget on the speakers, I am restricted by the depth of the shelves they are going on, so anything 200mm or less will work.......
    Anybody used Dali Spektor 1s?

  • Would look for front ported if going in an enclosed shelf. Maybe some CA ones to go with your amp: https://www.whathifi.com/cambridge-audio/sx-60/review

  • Too deep, unfortunately.

  • I've got a pair of AVI Neutron IIIs. Would certainly suit sound-wise; they're excellent little speakers but may not suit your budget. Looking for £200

  • Thanks for the offer, I'll pass on those as I've ordered the Dalis.

  • Oh nice, they have a great rep.

  • If anyone was following my amplifier woes from earlier in the thread and cares any more - it turned out that it was the amp, not the TT, so fucked it off and bought a Rega Brio. I really like it. Got an ex-demo model with decent warranty for a reasonable price.

  • Good choice, I heard a Brio recently and really liked it.

  • I may take you up on that. I can't stretch to @Velocio new ones so I was planning on buying the old ones.

  • They were not on my shopping list until I heard a pair. They were beyond budget until I saw a shop selling a new pair that a customer had turned down at a very sizeable discount.

I prefer the Tannoys with a power amp rather than a valve, something about the speakers being a little warm lent itself to the precision of a power amp.

I agree in general with the comment that they're good at all sound levels, but this isn't totally true as at the lower levels they lack a bit of life and punch... I couldn't have stepped down to smaller Tannoys without jumping too small though, but the 10" drivers on the Eaton's do a good job covering most sound levels really well in the large living room I have. I rarely drive them anything near where they'd be comfortable going. I only aim for 60-70db, for a folk singer to sound like they are present in the room rather than amplified.

  • Try these guys, v good (may not be keen on Quad tho). Also they are in Sheffield so not far from you.

  • Anyone familiar with old Thorens proprietary headshells?
I've got two, but one has too short pins in the connector. Are they for different tone arms?

  • Anyone in this thread dabbled with triggered lighting in addition to their hi-fi set up? Either at home or I guess in studio/theatre/gigging environments

  • Simple sound to light is quite effective. Bear in mind a lot of the cheap of the shelf options are noisy.

  • Yeah I’ve got some hue bulbs and synced that with Spotify that works quite well. Just wondering for the price of getting more Hue stuff whether picking up some static led bars/spots with DMX is worth it/even possible. Looks to be a fair bit cheaper!

  • The lighting environments you mention are practised in advanced, cue sheeted, programmed into a lighting board, and timed with a human typically in the loop to handle deviations that may arise.

Most disco / club lighting is "set a pattern for a BPM and let it go" regardless of the track. Except really high end clubs which do the lighting board + humans thing.

What you're likely to achieve is either:

    1. Audio input into a visualizer that controls lights — it will be subtly laggy, but you will notice and dislike it.
    2. Detect BPM and set a pattern that beat matches — this is the small club / disco scenario, and honestly it's about as good as you're going to get.

Bear in mind that lag isn't just detection of the music, but it's having lights that can go from off to on fast enough, and change colour fast enough.

Personally, if I wanted to do this I'd ignore the idea of lighting and instead go straight to a Smart TV and see if there's an app that will full screen a WinAmp style visualization, and then split the output from the amp to the TV somehow and let it do it's magic.
