  • This is a really interesting idea... given that the police will do nothing to help, legal hired goons to get your bike back for you is literally the missing piece of the puzzle when you see your bike on eBay and don't have a load of hard/fearless mates.

  • I was talking to them regarding recovering stolen hire bikes for my work. I think their model has changed slightly since they started. They didn't have much success recovering stolen bikes from Facebook/eBay etc so I believe they now offer a GPS tracker service which includes recovery of stolen bikes. They won't just have a go at getting your bike back if it turns up online. They were really helpful and professional when I dealt with them but stolen bikes can move so quickly that they just didn't have a chance.

  • A friend had his orange Ribble CGR AI RX400 bike stolen yesterday in hackney wick. He has a tracker on it, shows it's in Dagenham, but the police won't get involved. What would you do?

  • Fixed pirates or other group of volunteers to go get it. Or ask a mate to pose as a buyer and ‘test ride’ it away, ideally onto a van for a quick and safe escape.

  • Possibly worth contacting Backpedal? Despite my last post...

  • Posting on behalf a friend who's not on here.
Had her Ribble CGR ALe (grey/orange colour scheme) stolen outside of Glass mill leisure centre, Lewisham, today (17.05.23) sometime between 10:00-11:30. There is a tracker on it showing it is in a high-rise block of flats.
Police informed, etc. not much hope with them actually doing anything though.
It has Pit-Locks on the through axels so it'll be very difficult for the thief to remove the wheels.
Will try and get some pics of the drive side when my pal is back home.

  • don't want to victim blame here, but was that the lock you were using? it doesn't look very secure.

  • A friend has had their Aventon stolen from a garden shed in Telegraph Hill Brockley area. Give me a shout if you spot it. Has fairly distinctive stickers on

  • Madness, drop it off in the bike shop and see if it can be reunited with its owner?

  • This would have been a good idea but I didn't think of it and am now busy elsewhere. I guess if someone wants to, they can PM me for exact location

  • What’s the legality of rescuing possibly stolen goods abandoned in public to reunite them with their owner? Is it a defence against possession of stolen goods?

  • No idea, sorry. I'm washing my hands of this now, as I need to deal with other things...

  • The word ‘possibly’ creates a problem.

  • Ah didn’t mean to reply to you.

  • Indeed, but without knowing the circumstances in depth personally, such as recognising a close loved ones bike ridden by a stranger, it’s only ever ‘possibly’.

I wonder if there are the equivalent to Good Samaritan statutes or precedent that might apply to a 3rd party that takes it upon themselves to secure a theft-prone, high-value object that is reasonably perceived as abandoned in an insecure environment. 🤔
