  • I did my virtual marathon on a BMX yesterday. 3 hrs 14

  • Anyone got a place in the Hackney Half they don't want? Left it too late...

  • Tough marathon at the weekend. Totally cramped in both legs at 19 miles. Had to walk two miles, then could steady run in the last 5.2. Finished in 4hr15 when I was on 3hr35 pace until mile 19. Gutting to walk as others ran past, but was happy in the end to finish. Didn't really want to even write this!

Well done to Jamwam and Sainsburys_Ed for the London Marathon finishes.

  • Thanks - keen to do the full distance as already have marathon legs + it's just round the corner!

  • 3 peaks race today, made the cut off unlike last year. Absolutely brutal, not sure I had fully recovered from Manchester marathon and haven’t been training in the hills as much lately. It will be a good few years before I do that again.

  • A runner in last weeks london marathon died on the way home after the event . How sad

  • Sounds like just finishing was a real achievement - in a time I'd have been pleased with if I'd run the whole thing let alone walked some of it.

I've never tried and marathon and I'm not sure I'd want or be able to, so big respect for your effort.

  • Thanks, getting past the frustration a bit now :) just got to slow down in the first half next time.

  • Good effort so soon after Manchester!

  • Taper for HM? .. I’m two-weeks away and my thoughts were to drop my distance/volume by 30% this week to 50% next week (and longest run at 15km) but keep ‘almost’ everything at my target HM pace.

    Any thoughts ?

  • No need to run almost everything at target pace, more easier = better rested.

  • Have a look what an example training plan does.

Here are the Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced plans from Bupa: https://www.bupa.co.uk/health-information/exercise-fitness/running-programme-half-marathon

    Other plans exist.

  • 50 mile Ultra in Epping Forest on 16th Sept -
    https://www.orionharriers.com/ultra-2023/

  • Got some 1st generation endorphin pros second hand with 20kms on them (if the seller to be believed).

I’ve not tried them on yet but the lack of flex in the sole seems terrifying !

Also ordered a club vest so it feels like I’m really taking this half-marathon seriously.

  • Nice and don't worry about the lack of flex all carbon shoes are like that. They've got plenty of bouncy foam so they won't feel harsh. I think they're the most natural feeling out of carbon shoes hope you get on with them. I've not tried the new version yet. Good luck with the training 💪

  • first easy run 10 days after marathon, felt it.

  • Running through Africa (360 marathons in 240 days)

  • did a first half marathon (ish), including some steps towards the end - thnx many on this thread for advice along the way

  • Nice time, well done!

  • What’s the general consensus on decent available m marathon plan, ideally it would be pretty flexible to fit in club training sessions and I don’t mind paying a bit if required.

  • Tough to know. Just about any plan will get you through a marathon, though you've done one recently right?
What's the intention for the next? Running it or racing it (regardless of the actual time)?
How often do you run at the moment, how used to speedwork are you... do you have an idea of what your race pace 5k, 10k times are etc.

Something like the Hal Higdon plans would give you a loose structure
    e.g. https://www.halhigdon.com/training-programs/marathon-training/intermediate-1-marathon/

If you run with a club though then it could be worth bending the ear of a coach alongside/prior to any online plan. And obviously be realistic about what time you can devote to it - no point someone suggest building you gradually up to running 100km a week if you've not got more than a few hours to spare.

    tl;dr, dunno, depends...

  • Pfitzinger Advanced Marathoning for 55mpw and up.

  • Ran a successful (and mainly enjoyable) half-marathon at Leeds today.

Many thanks to the various pieces of advice on this thread as I arrived at the start line significantly better prepared than for previous events.

When I wrote down my goals at the start of the year I had 1:45 for half.. my training seemed to show this was possibly a little soft.. so I picked the arbitrary 100 minutes as my stretch goal.

I set out close to the 1:40 pacers and found myself pushing on a little quicker. Loads of dodging and weaving for the first few miles as we passed the tail end of the marathon.

Absolutely fantastic atmosphere and I was running on familiar roads which helped with pacing etc.

Caffeine gels at about 7km and 14km .. new(ish) carbon-plated shoes.. I basically pulled every lever I could to squeeze out some extra pace.

Last 2km was not pretty but I pushed through and came in at a shade under 1:36 which I’m absolutely delighted with.

Chapeau to anyone running the full marathon course today.. just looking at the elevation plot was enough to trigger anxiety.
