  • i do, too expensive for what it is

  • Ah shame. Whilst ££ looked a much neater option to rocker

  • i did to save space, never actually experienced a rocker plate so cant compare. It does move decent amount, does it help? no idea. I dont spend more than an hour on turbo.

  • Me neither re a rocker. I don't do more than 2 but thinking ahead to later this year and I'm going to be indoors 5 days a week most likely 🤮

  • Anyone recommend a clear or light grey mat to go under a turbo? Have clearance to keep in the living room. Would like to keep discrete beyond disguising it as a drying rack.

  • I use a yoga mat

  • Long story, and long shot, but would anyone have a spare one of these knocking around, if I can't persuade a retailer there should have been one attached to the Neo (it looks like a bit of a faff to get them in the UK currently)..

EDIT: Nevermind, it looks like Garmin just reduced the lead time from 8 weeks to 1 day :)

  • Hello residents of this forum.

After two punctures in two training rides, coupled with a heavy workload and limited free time, I've decided to bite the bullet and get an indoor trainer.

I don't need it to be smart in any way or sync up with any device. I train using HR on my Garmin and that's it. No Zwift or Strava or Trianing Peaks or anything like that.

I do some 'spiky' sessions for cross in the winter, and some more sustained efforts for (10 mile) TTs in the summer, and rarely train for more than 90 mins at a time.

So Ive narrowed my choices down to rollers or a 'dumb' (wheel on?) turbo trainer. I think I'd prefer something I can sling my only road bike on and off with as little fuss as possible. And does anyone have any recommendations that aren't ridiculously expensive?

  • Nice to see you.

I find rollers a bit more stimulating than a dumb trainer, mainly because you have to think a little on maintaining your balance. These are fine and so cheap it's comical.

The only drawback I've found is that for really high end sprint type efforts, I bounce around a bit much on the rollers, but if you can stay seated and spin a very high gear you can control it. For most cross specific training, i.e. VO2 max efforts, they are fine.

  • Your gospel is all I need, Andy :) Thanks.

    Will give them a bash

  • I've got something like this (without the speed sensor) https://www.wiggle.co.uk/tacx-boost-turbo-trainer-bundle and its totally fine. it's very easy to set up and put away. I thought it would eat tyres but it really doesn't. the lever on the clamp got a bit sticky but a bit of chain lube sorted it out and I've had no other problems.

I also got a set of rollers but I'm rubbish at them and find it very stressful. I should really sell them.

  • If you do go down the fluid trainer route then cyclops yellow thing has lasted me well.

  • Thanks fellow fresh-air avoiders

  • I still need to get rid of my old Computrainer. Everyone laughs but when lockdown happened and trainers were in high demand I was loving it. You can run it with Trainerroad using their legacy app just fine and it did work with Zwift once upon a time but who knows now. Special price for you ;)

Also have a Cyclops JetFluid that is a nice wheel on trainer that I only really use for TT warmups and since I'm doing basically zero TTing again I probably should get rid of.

  • What a timely post! I've just picked up some Tacx Antares rollers locally of Facebook, so we'll see how they go

  • You say fresh air avoiders I say time maximisers

  • so rollers are fun in a kind of 'now terrified to take my hand off the door frame' way

  • You soon get the hang of it. Then get cocky and fall off. Or so a friend said.

  • Yeah, I practiced a bit more and then just did a session and once you go for it properly it's easy to stay on. Not confident to grab a bottle yet...

    Also – static shocks

  • So erm I broke the handle lever thing on my cyclops yellow beast.
I’m going to try and glue but in the mean time, who has a dumb wheel on turbo they want to get rid of in se London?

  • I've got an Elite Muin in NE...

    EDIT it's wheel off sorry

  • I mean, I’m not against wheel off, I’m just not that into spending that much money.

  • They are turning up 2nd hand at reasonable prices. Worth it if you can afford it.

  • I’m definitely swimming in the “gorilla epoxy” and “brand new wheel on for £70” rather than “second hand direct for £300” or “zwift hub brand new £450”.

Especially as the funds I have were targeted to getting my newish bike built up.

  • If I hadn’t money gunned my credit card already and set my sights on paying it off this year, I’d have pulled the trigger on a new zwift hub.
