Does anyone know anything about gardening?

  • @ColinTheBald as you're here...

I'd like a slot drain channel on our new patio. Is there a particular type or brand you'd recommend? Or are they all of a muchness?

    This sort of thing:

    https://www.drainagesuperstore.co.uk/product/aco-brickslot-hexdrain-threshold-channel-drain-1m-x-125mm-x-148mm-a15.html

    • House is at the bottom.
    • Green hatched section is where the channel drain is
    • blue line is drainage in the lawn using one of those perforated pipe thingys
    • X marks where the actual drain our gutters, etc. run into.

  • My personal preference is for the ACO with the resin and stone mix channel and galvanised covers. Much more rigid than the plastic, easily cut and (to my eye) aesthetically better.

  • As an alternative, if you don't like the regimented look of the grille, use the same product, go 50mm or so lower and cover with the shingle or decorative pebbles of your choice.

  • Cheers.

My OH has just vetoed the slot drain. Now thinking that we run it off on a gradient back to the main drain and work out a way to make it look nice.

The grille covered in gravel is a really good shout.

  • Does anyone know anything about (indoor) gardening?

Had this weeping fig tree for about 20 years but only recently its leaves started going yellow and dropping. Any ideas... it's fed and watered - needs repotting perhaps?

  • mine shed a bit at the end of winter, too. i'm hoping it's starting to recover now.

enough light, don't over water, feed sparingly. they don't like draughts, either. or being too cold.

edit: some chat about mine over the in house pants thread

  • That's a beautiful plant & thanks for pointing me to a more suitable thread.
    I'll try some fresh soil.

  • Most of my roses are thriving, but this one just can’t be arsed. Any thoughts? Too much dead on it that can go? It flowered last year.

  • Treading in can compress the soil and make it harder for the seed to turn.

  • Looks fairly dead tbh. Are there any new shoots on it?

  • I can see a couple of shoots and a leaf at the left hand side?

  • I've had exactly this too.

It's an amazing rose, very established, but only one proper shoot with leaves and two other minute ones. It's sibling on the other side of the garden - which has historically been weaker - is absolutely covered in leaves and new growth.

    My plan is:

    • good quality feed (done)
    • leave it until the leaves and new growth gets established
    • later in the year cut out all the excess and reduce.

All I can think is it's a bit too big with too much old growth combined with a savage winter.

  • Spray it with rose clear, give it a feed and a mulch and cross your fingers

  • Ok, thanks all, I may take the extra dead bits that aren’t budding off and feed them all, rose clear says it can be used in organic gardening, but also says harmful to bees so I’ll skip that.

  • Have so much flowering in the lawn thought I’d bring some in.

  • Has anyone started hardening things off to plant out yet? Looks like it might hit 2 degrees tonight but it then looks much less likely to be as cold for a couple of weeks. I dunno, newbie.

  • The shed thread doesn't seem to get much traffic so thought I'd try this here.

I need a 3' x 2' shed (preferably smaller but everything smaller looks really shit) and these two have made the shortlist
    https://www.elbecgardenbuildings.co.uk/2-x-3-560mm-x-870mm-shire-overlap-tool-store/p3558
    https://www.elbecgardenbuildings.co.uk/3-x-2-950mm-x-618mm-shire-shiplap-tall-store/p2718
Ideally I'd prefer the overlap one as it's a bit smaller but 6mm cladding sounds very flimsy. Is there likely to be much actual difference between the two? I'm not expecting it to be super weatherproof but somewhat decent would be good.

  • I always jump the gun under pressure to "tidy all this shit up".

Depends what they are? Personally I'd just pop things out in the day and bring it back at night.

  • Whatever you go for it's worth treating or painting it if you want it to last - don't skimp on crap felt. If you want it to be more secure go for shiplap but I'm sure you won't be storing exotic bikes in there :)

  • Many thanks - i'll keep an eye on it to see if it sprouts any white petals...!

  • Cheers. Yes, the intention is to give it a few coats of something, hadn't thought about the felt though.

Not fussed about security, probably won't even bother locking it, but would like something that doesn't feel too wobbly.

  • Similar question to @RodSaetan - I bought some Alliums from the garden centre yesterday, about 6 inches of greenery coming out of the bulb each in a separate pot. I presume they have come from a greenhouse and are currently sitting on the wooden decking in their pots.

Are they ok there for a few days or are they going to die of cold/shock? Should I get them into the ground asap?

  • Can anyone identify this? Not the woodruff but the mint-looking thing above it.

Don't think it's mint as the only other mint I have in the garden is in a pot a good few meters away, and I don't think it flowers and spreads by seed easily?

Probably a weed (in the sense of, it came of its own accord), but possibly I scattered some seeds last year and forgot about it.

Seems particularly vigorous - it has come out of nowhere and grown very fast this spring

  • It's peppermint, crush a leaf to double check. Mint is a superspreader.

  • Thought it only spread by runners, not seed?

Am I going to have to make sure I remove every tiny piece of broken root as well? Sigh
