  • Wait, what?

It's a 12hr race but in two parts?

  • Must be like that 24hr ride I did last year, in 24 parts

  • Correct. The first half you get to finish whatever lap you started before cutoff. Then you get to come back next morning and continue. The second half only the completed number of laps by the time of cutoff are counted.

  • They do have a 24hr category. No pause for those guys

  • So, you're gonna share 6hrs and then both chill and share another 6hrs or are you doing a whole 6hr block each?

  • Not sure. I think we might tag team after each lap or two, because that's probably the faster way to do ride. A lap is roughly 30mins I am lead to believe.

  • If you have the option I was going to suggest doing single laps or probably double laps if it's only 30min each, as it's quicker. I just thought maybe the rules were each rider had a 6hr block.

  • So it's basically a 2-day stage race. I'd definitely be swapping in and out both days.

From experience in 6hr pairs at Brighton Big Dog, 25 mins "out" doesn't give much time to find food and drink, have a shit and actually sit down and try and recover. Double laps better.

  • Yeah. That was sort of my thoughts as well, but people that have done it say it's easier to stay warm and alert if the swapping mode is one lap, plus the overalls stay faster.

  • You need to have a quick chat if you want a longer stop for some reason you can try and plan it. When we were racing 24hrs we'd maybe look at who was riding faster or if someone was tired or injured we'd sit them out for a rotation and someone else would do a double lap.

I guess it's only 2x6hrs so you're less likely to be too fucked to push fast doubles so singles might be faster. There can be time lost to swapping though, so factor that in. Also, sometimes one of you might be in a good bunch or be chasing down a rival team and not want to swap, so you should remain flexible for when your mate just rides on past or whatever :)

  • All good points. I reckon bunch riding is probably out of the window as it's all pretty narrow single track. I'm expecting a lot of being passed and pulling to the side. Not sure how much overtake I'll do

  • Fair. The ones I've done were probably easier courses. They tend to make 24hr events a bit simpler to stop people eating shit every lap in the early hours.

  • The way the event works is that they ride 2pm till 8pm and the resume the next day for the remaining half. Not sure if that's better or worse tbh

I mean, it might mean you don't need a helmet light so you can see in the dark, but yeah.

  • Right now it's pretty dark here at around 6pm now, so I'm expecting to have to use the helmet light for the last two hours at least. The place where the event takes place is in the sticks. Very little light pollution.

  • I'm two days into five riding the Tweed Valley, and it's amazing, but I think my arms might be about to fall off

  • Innerleithen in the sun! This could well be the best week of weather this year for riding. Some of us are shuffling emails.

  • Took my first MTB spin in a long time on some lovely trails up here in Fife yesterday afternoon and the conditions are absolutely perfect.

    Get it while you can!

  • Sampled some traditional local cuisine today đź‘Ś

  • Day one done. I had a bit of a boo boo and have a sore ass cheek now courtesy of a branch snagging my bars. My partner then managed to come in 2 mins before the last lap cutoff and I had to miserably ride on the sore bits for the last lap. We gained a position though, solidly mid pack in our cat at 8th.

  • I set out to answer the question “how much bike is too much bike for Swinley?”, and I can confirm that a 160 mm Enduro bike with Double Down tyres and a coil shock is too much bike.

The whole forest needs to be tipped up so it’s at quite a steep angle, then it’d be in its element.

  • (This is the only bike other than a Brompton that I have at the moment).

  • Did you go ride the bigger steeper rough stuff at the far end?

  • Managed 9 uplift runs at Innerleithen yesterday with only one minor little crash onto the fire road halfway down. Thankfully I wasn't the only one, as three others in succession hit the deck in the exact same way.
There's some absolutely terrifying/hilariously steep shale trails in there, spent most of the time laughing my head off at how I'm going to get my bike round the next corner, and somehow did

  • Done. That was hard
