I think this is exactly what happens. A friend of mine was able to get a Rolex Sub at retail with zero wait at the height of the mania a couple of years ago.
He bought a Breitling and something else and magically the sub was available with no wait 🤷.

Business idea:
A watch club, like a supercar club. You pay a membership fee which gets you points that you can trade for borrowing watches. A Daytona for a weekend costs lots of points, a Datejust on a Monday night, not so many.
The name?

So this is the natural forum evolution of the communal LFGSS bike trailer. I’ll buy a 2% stake in the forum Rolex in exchange for an annual one weeks worth of wearing.

I looked into a similar thing a while back. Insurance was an absolute killer. But it wasn't even the biggest hurdle! But great name.

I occasionally cycle to work wearing my Pelagos and get super worried about stacking it.
Not sure I'd want to leave the house with a years mortgage payments on my wrist, let alone ride a bicycle off-road

Every now and then I used to courier some really expensive watches around for this guy
https://www.howardfrum.com/
He would just give me the watch boxed and throw it in my bag. Bought my first watch off him and must of paid 5x the cost of the watch in repairs over the last 30 years from crashing. -

more the "you're fucking joking right? Right?!" part.
I think you just reach your threshold of income vs cost.
Like how some people on the average income shit themselves about wearing a 2.5k watch on the street let alone a £500 one.

There were a few MoonSwatch in the less desirable colours available in a store yesterday for less than UK RRP
I was of course being paid in Submariners to get you all signed up to the Canadian pension scheme.. It is def a very relaxed vibe, and nobody gives a damn about your knowledge level or what watches you own..
