Which Groupset?

  • I've just put the serial number of the shifter into the sram website search and it's definitely the same actuation as what's written on the side of the derailleur.

I guess I'll have a look at the chain length and b-tension screw.

  • Having the B adjust too close to the cassette, as you'd set up a more traditional mech can lead it to do what you described, I'd also double check the cable routing through the mech to the clamp as it's a bit weird on those if you're not used to it.

  • What are the current forum approved and rated 130bcd chainrings? My Praxis Buzz set have been faultless and the only reason I'm not just getting another set is that they've gone up 50% since the last time I bought them, and really I only need the outer ring, not a pair.
Aesthetically, I can't bring myself to use Rotor rings, and the TA Hegoa ones I have look great on SISL2s, but they're shift like a wet teabag...

  • I've been using a 42T cassette with a medium cage Force 1 derailleur. It kind of works, but really badly, takes quite a bit of tension to get the chain back off the largest cog.

What can I do to make my shifting life better - without shelling out for a new long cage derailleur c.£200? Will the Wolftooth links work? Any idea which one I need, the Goatlink? Do they work well? Do I just need one of those and a longer chain?

  • Those links do work, but not nearly as good as having the right derailleur. If you don't want to spend buy rival, or even Apex, rather than bodge.

  • Assuming they can all be had for a pretty similar price (give or take 100) is there an obvious choice between Force etap axs / 105 di2 / Chorus 12 speed hydro/mechanical. Full groupset for a road dedicated bike yet to be built.

  • Get Rival, maybe change the crank

  • SRAM sucks donkey's dick, electronic>mechanical, so 105.

  • Hah all the reviews have them at level pegging but word of mouth seems to echo this sentiment. I was leaning towards 105 di2 but its double the cost of ultegra 11 speed hydro atm... is it double the price better

  • LFGSS is definitely pro Shimano but I much prefer Sram. After switching from Di2 to AXS I won't go back out of choice. Sram is just so much nicer to use IMHO.

  • I think there are a few vocal SRAM critics on here whose voices drown out others. I’m a user of both SRAM and Shimano (and was a Campag user for years too), and I think etap is by far the most intuitive shifting system. So much so that I modify my Shimano bikes to mimic SRAM as much as I can.

  • 105 11s Hydro is £450 on wiggle right now. You really can't beat that if you don't need electronic.

  • I was leaning towards 105 di2 but its double the cost of ultegra 11 speed hydro atm... is it double the price better

If you can afford it, yes. If you can't, no. Ultegra 11 speed hydro is very, very good. But it's not Di2.

    You called?

I've just had too many bad experiences with SRAM kit in the past. And I still maintain that having a different battery in every component is a really fucking stupid idea.

  • I was thinking @hippy more than you, if that's any consolation.

If you want a proper wireless groupset, then it's a necessity. Having run a etap system for the past 6 years, the charging has been no more challenging than di2. The CR2032 batteries in the levers last for ages, and you get haptic notification when they are running low.

  • If you want a proper wireless groupset, then it's a necessity.

I get that. I just don't have a problem with wires. They're really, really good at what they do.

Anyway, it's a miracle if I manage to ensure that my Di2 battery, Garmin, HRM and power meter all have charged batteries in them at any one time. Increase that to 7 batteries to keep charged, and I might as well just not bother.

  • 12 speed di2 has 3 batteries. What's one more?

  • Not if you wire up the shifters. Then it has one. Which is the perfect number of batteries for a shift system.

  • They need replacing every 2 years, why bother with wires?

  • Or is it one too many?

  • I'm going to complicate matters and throw Campag back in the mix. If you go mechanical, Chorus 12 is the best mechanical groupset.

12 speed goodness and ultrashift means you can change gears almost as fast as electronic. With SRAM/Shimano mechanical groups you have to slowly fap your way down the cassette one cog at a time, it sucks once you've tried ultrashift.

  • Lolpag.

  • They need replacing every 2 years, why bother with wires?

If you use wires, they don't need replacing at all. Infinity>2 years.

  • Yep, it’s all good. Love chorus. Got di2 on 2 other bikes and there’s definitely room for both.

  • I was thinking @hippy

Everybody does. Don't fight it. Let him just slide in there...
