Thanks again all - after a two hour session last night using my wife’s 2014 mbp, my external drive and a very patient Apple advisor we managed to get all the music onto my phone. Subscription isn’t for me as yet (and as per the suggestion to up my cloud storage, that doesn’t work for locally uploaded music anyway) since I have some music that’s not available from those services. I’m also of the generation that still wants to own stuff, not just rent it.
Similar - I'm going to invest in a Network Hard Drive that plugs into the router so I can keep all my mp3s and digital library on there, as well as work backups. That way I can stream my library via Sonos rather than pay a subscription on music I already own + new digital download purchases.
We use an old apple airport (I think, that's my wife's area of expertise) to stream our own music, or any online content such as local radio stations that have such weak and crowded signals as to be virtually untunable.
