I don't think that's true, the chain would still be at tension. Otherwise you'd experience the same effect pedalling forwards when the quicklink was on the bottom of the chain run surely?

Connectors are death
After by chance finding out the connecter loosening on my first fixed bike I have resorted to always connecting chains the old fashioned way.
