Also they'd just pass on the costs further widening the gap between those who can afford it. It would probably put some smaller schools out of business too, as they'd struggle to compete with bigger ones while charging not dissimilar amounts.
However, they would be subject to the market like other businesses.
The rich kids will always have societal advantages, at least if they go to private schools you can identify their privilege and ding them for it at university entrance.
Taking away tax breaks would probably not achieve that much good as the schools would recoup the cost by taking away the "lip service" stuff they do to advocate for charitable status (bursaries, open facilities to local people in holidays etc).
