  • Not just too tight laces? (I get this - especially long runs where my feet swell a little over time)

  • I had a bit of a mishap on weds. Back in a few months....

  • Oh fuck. Legitimate excuse to avoid nationals though.

    What happened? Heal fast.

  • I was walking with my twins, and I slipped on ice. I looked at my foot, and it was pointing out at a 35 degree angle.

Dislocated and fractured. Ho ho ho! Christmas plans have changed a bit, as has my marathon training start date

I'm glad my calf tear had healed in my left leg, otherwise I'd have been in real bother

  • Ouch - hope you heal quickly!

  • I was confused by the chair and thought you had a ring light pointing at your foot! Yowch - heal fast!

  • Ouch, heal strong.

  • certainly relevant if you're aiming for more than just one marathon. no point punishing yourself all the time.

  • Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 for £94.08 at Sportsshoes using code WILL10

  • I have axon and endorphin 2. Not run in the endorphin 2. But the sole glows in the dark.

  • Axon are ace (previously only enjoyed running in Pegasus ymmv)

  • Any interest in a pair of Mizuno Hitogami 3s in size 9 / 43, used for an entire two parkruns and a couple of track sessions?

Great lightweight speed shoe - they were supposed to be my race shoe (for someone that never raced anything), and now my feet have got bigger from years of wearing barefoot shoes (or just age), so they're just a bit too neat.

£15 say and pick up from either South Hampstead/ Swiss Cottage or around Moorgate in working hours?

  • Running watch advice please ( my knowledge is very limited) -
I have a Garmin forerunner 45 which has been great for recording mileage/routes/paces.

Looking at being more adventurous with Ultra style races and see that a lot of these events give you GPX map files to download and then follow on your watch to aid navigation.

Is there anything in particular to look out for in sales blurb of watches that can easily identify that they support GPX maps ?

Some I've looked at just say they are GPS watches which I think applies to ones like my forerunner and also to ones that use GPX mapping.

Any help understanding will be gratefully received.

  • I think you'll want one with maps on. Fenix perhaps? I've got a fenix 6 S solar which has maps on it. I've not used the facility but the maps are pretty detailed

  • Plenty of the Garmin and Coros watches have great battery and screens for running maps. It will be as @doubleodavey says the maps feature you want. I have the garmin 945 and it has this feature but think the fenix models are better suited to it.

I've had a lot of Fenix over the years and bought an Epix 2 in February. A few random comments...

Epix 2 - I've used mine for 16 weeks of ski touring and mountaineering this year. Plus usual cycling, climbing and running. It has not skipped a beat. Battery life wise it sucks up multi day events. So far I haven't had to put it into the various low power modes to achieve this. Mapping is excellent. Have used it in whiteouts above the snow line and found it to be really useful. The altimeter was accurate enough to join in to volunteer some search and rescue activities in Austria this summer...does very well compared to professional altimeters. Its by far the best sports watch I've tried and I've tried loads over the years since 2005 or so. Its spendy and the main reason for being spendy is the higher resolution than the Fenix range. This also in theory compromises battery life although this hasnt been an issue for me at all.

Fenix 7: I chose the Epix because I was sure that I would need the extra resolution to make the watch usable for mapping and for day to day use when away from home for long sporting trips. Turns out I may have been wrong. I tried a Fenix 7 for maps a few weeks ago and was suprised at how good the screen looked. I maybe could have got away with buying a Fenix 7 instead of an Epix 2 and saved myself some money.

Tip for both: The sapphire option makes the screen more reflective and harder to read in daylight. I am also unconvinced that it makes the watch more durable. I;ve had the mineral glass versions of the Fenix 2, 3, 6, through to the Epix 2 and despite whacking them against rocks have never had a screen damage issue. I'd suggest that the sapphire upgrade isn't worth it. Garmin Pay works very well but virtually no UK banks support it. There's a list of banks that are supported. Check first.

Caveat: I've never tried any of the more recent Garmin running watches with mapping so if you don't really need multisport i'm sure there might be a better option for you than Fenix or Epix but they are very good options nonetheless. It does seem pretty clear that Garmin make the best multisport and mapping sports watches, its just a case of finding the one that fits your requirements the best.

  • Oh, and Curry's in North Greenwich has the entire Garmin range on display. Not sure if thats a thing that happens at all Currys but maybe an idea to visit to check size, fit, resolution etc.

  • I had the fenix 6 sapphire before, and it moved about on my wrist and rubbed a hole in the skin, right where the bony bit was.

It's definitely worth trying it on before buying! Garmin support were good and swapped it for the 6 S Solar

  • That has reminded me. I've had a few warranty issues with Garmin watches over the years and Garmin have always been very good at sending a no questions asked replacement within days of being contacted. They have also offered me heavily discounted replacements for watches with issues out of warranty on occasion. Not saying Garmins are problem prone, more that on the occasion I have had an issue over the last 15 years or so they've stood by their products.

    Jealous

  • Yeah, sorry for the humble brag. Had ourselves a mini mid life crisis this year.
