Does anyone use the thicker high neck winter base layers? Looks good in theory but I have fear about misjudging the temps or doing a hilly ride a boiling!
-
• #1153
I always want to remove anything from around my neck after about 15 minutes of riding. Tends to make me overheat.

has anyone got a pair of the spesh neoprene overshoes? They look good. Raises the question why most overshoes are basically ankle sock height? that's never made any sense to me.

I hate this.
Think I'm gonna get some of these soon

But they're more waterproof than thermal.
Spatz if you can live with the rank graphics -

Oh yeah, I'm a cross guy like andyp said, I can't stay warm on winter rides!

And you need to add the burner to that list
-
• #1159
Buff/merino collar turns your regular winter base layer into this. Plus burner for a windproof chest.

I think if you attempt to put those overshoes on you will be ready for the club run a day later !
-
• #1161
Don't bother with overshoes, get waterproof/winter cycling shoes and full length waterproof trousers.

Does nobody run kingsmill bags inside their shoes any more?

More of a Warburton's man myself.

Yes! I did this in rovaniemi arctic race for a bit when I went super cold- plastic bag on one foot which had got cold inside my sock, foil blanket under my jacket and following a science experiment with my year 4 class I bubble wrapped all my water and kept it inside my jacket- I was the only person still with liquid by the last 10km!

Not dissimilar one spring day i rode to llangollen , no coat nice and sunny then a snow storm came in much like on friday . I had 1 cheese sandwich and a sunblest bag. Ride over the horseshoe with one hand in a back pocket . When that went numb swap hand and bag. The worst ride mistake ever.

Hey!
I have a Raynaud Syndrome (My hands are basically always cold) and the winter is always very painful even with the usual 2 gloves layers. I was looking to get some bar mitts, any one has experience with these (or other brands). Are they really effective?
Otherwise, any recommendations for really really good gloves? -
• #1169
It's advice you've probably already heard, but keeping your core extra warm really helps keep extremities warm too. I have really bad hand and feet circulation, similarly they're cold from Nov through to March even in the house. Last night riding home I wore longjohns, thermal vest, jumper, gilet and a coat, then skullcap and lobster gloves and I was perfectly warm, even my fingers

I used to use them on my motorbike and yes they were. You'll also see most people who race Iditarod on bikes using them.

Whats the thoughts on lobster gloves vs full mittens? is the extra articulation of the lobster absolutely vital for road levers?
-
• #1172
I've not tried mittens, but you can just about use lobster gloves with modern shifting systems, especially electronic ones. If mittens have less articulation then they'd make shifting very challenging.

Are they really effective?
Very effective indeed. They remove wind chill and create an extra layer of insulation around your hand. Even better if they are at least water-resistant. I can usually just wear a very thin pair of liner gloves underneath mine and be very comfortable.

Cheers. I may add that to my christmas list.

I tried some layering with gloves and it works brilliantly. Decathlon makes some half lobster over gloves. The ones in the middle are my favourites for most cold weather but when they get damp with sweat the cold starts creeping in, the over glove stops that. Haven't had to use the liner gloves yet.
