  • I'm curious - you may've covered this earlier - what was the thinking behind having the home and the workshop as separate buildings?

  • I’ve walked in darker afternoons here compared to that night!

Something that still amazes me when I go back home (to NI, so nowhere near as remote or North) is moon shadow on a good night. I love it.

  • I'm not sure I've commented before but I've really enjoyed watching this come together! It's like a less smug Grand Designs. The house is looking great, looking forward to seeing the end result!

  • looking forward to seeing the end result!

    Forum trip?

  • loved the updates on this.

could feel the one where you decided fuck yeah we stay here tonight. love the little set up of a few home comforts and a view of the yonder.

much more modest project here but was a big deal when we kinda moved back in to the main space of this house at the beginning of oct.

    keep the updates coming dude

  • 100% - such a great project to witness, and a man amazing home for you guys. AND SO CLOSE!

  • That’s really kind of you, thank you! I really think we’re capturing the goal of it feeling like an old house rather than a new build, the stove really helps with that I think?

@JurekB it was a combo of building regulations not being as intense (and therefore cheaper to build) for non living areas and not wanting to have lithium batteries in the house. Them going on fire is super scary, the joiner is on the fire brigade here and said they create their own oxygen so feed themselves.

@stevo_com oh I know right, there’s something kind of magical walking around in that light isn’t there?

@ltc that is a massive compliment, thank you so much. Smug is definitely not what I’ve ever aimed for, been homeless before and spent lots of time certain I’d die in a rattle damp single glazed hovel before so feel intensely fortunate for this opportunity!

@andyp it is a fun wee couple hour cycle round here, plenty of space for setting up some tents for the night too

@jonny cheers bud! It does feel like such a huge step forward using the space almost like we will when it’s done rather than going up there purely to paint or tile or … it really was a lift that we both needed to maintain momentum right now.

Talking about that, we’ve got things measured out for starting on the bathroom tiling tomorrow. I had meant to do that today, but the weather was dry and in November you have to take advantage of that up here! We brought a couple other bits of furniture in, that desk was my gran’s work desk that she was allowed to keep when she retired. That cleared enough space in the container to put all the extra cladding that had been lying in the workshop into there, and that let me really give the workshop a tidy.

  • Them going on fire is super scary, the joiner is on the fire brigade here and said they create their own oxygen so feed themselves.

That was sound advice, I have seen a lithium battery fire and they are almost impossible to put out without a special extinguisher. One of the reasons I will never buy unbranded lithium batteries, or even branded ones from shops I do not trust (or cheap Chinese rechargeable shit)

  • Yeah we grabbed one of those extinguishers just in case. Doubt I’ll be running towards it if it ever did go on fire, but handy to have just in case.

These headed off to their new home today, just into the cupboard in the workshop, but nice to get them out the way for now.

We also got some tiling done in the bathroom and the first splashback in the kitchen. Really like these tiles as they’re not perfectly straight lines and variations of the colour as well so is pretty forgiving when tiling. Still some to cut for the top row, but the generator ran out of diesel for cutting the last lot..

  • Can we hear more about that wheelbarrow headlight? Dynamo?

  • Ah I wish, but that’s a great idea!! Unfortunately just a 12v screwfix work light sitting on the front wheel supports. Might look into making a wee bracket or mount for it as it does fit well.

Boats were cancelled yesterday so the plumber and the electrician weren’t able to get out. Gave me time to tick a bunch of things off without people in the way though. Got some grouting done in the bathroom and put up the top layer of cut tiles, got the grouting done on the kitchen splashback, gave the bench seat it’s first coat of lady Penelope (F.A.B I reckon!), got one of the big hanging apex lights together and gave everything a good tidy so the plumber can just crack on while I’m at work today.

Really enjoying the combo of colours and how everything is tying together!

  • Bit of a photo dump again, been working flat out because move in date is next Wednesday. Days off are 12 or 13 hour days and as soon as I’m back from work I’m into work clothes and up painting away. Had a few successes recently and got the porch almost done (final coat on the wall late last night).

We got the kitchen lights up and have a plan for getting the others up this mlorning, I might raise it a foot or so but I’m really chuffed with it. Bathroom is almost done and got a limestone tile skirting under the sink. Think the plumber is doing more of the heat pump pipework in the loft today and we’ll be hanging lights and I’ll hopefully spend this afternoon or evening on the kitchen splashback, getting there..

  • Next Wednesday!!! Super exciting. You’ve done such a great job of making it personal and using what you’ve found and like (the wood under the sink, the skylight frames for the boot room seat.

Really impressive and going to be lovely and snug for the cold winter!

  • Kitchen lights are v cool, nice work

  • Yeah, putting in some shifts before then but it’s easier knowing the beginning of the end is in sight!

It’s taken a bit of ingenuity and some head scratching but it’s also saved us a fortune between those bits and the new big light fixtures (I saw a much more professional looking one with the staves for £700 a light!!).

@EejitCheers, I really like it and think the braided cables really help! We’d been trying to pick a colour for cable for months but feel the natural look has ended up nicer.

Couldn’t be happier with the big lights. The sparky attached a plug to one of the light wires so we could run some power to them as early morning and late night are too dark now to do some of the more fiddly work or just by job lights.

  • Oh yeah baby, this is the good shit

  • Most excellent.

  • It's all looking so good! You must be so pleased with how it's turning out.

  • I love the light fittings.

I also love that they would not work in anyone else's homes.

  • pendants are looking spectacular!
i've got a stack of those pink tiles waiting for me to tile our cloakroom splashback - good choice ;)

  • pendants are looking spectacular!

I capitalised Orkney in the title.
