I mean it definitely looks suspicious but, on the other hand, VAR is fucking terrible

So it’s for offside in a different phase of play. Cool.
“They’ll find a way”
Great commentating that.

The FA will cave. Craven, spineless, feeble etc.

100%
I couldn’t respect Kane any less but somehow I feel I’m going too.

"However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play."

I look forward to the post match interview where the captains talk about the 'character' being displayed in their team...

So the message is “we stand in solidarity unless it gets a bit inconvenient”?
-
• #162911
Pathetic isn't it. I think entire teams should wear the armband and all get sent off/booked/whatever instantly. THAT would be a message.
-
• #162912
A brief look anywhere online will show how many people are against any of them wearing the arm band. It’s really quite depressing. I imagine they can only uphold one of two images. Wear the bands, get into some kind of trouble, please those who agree and annoy the fans who think ‘football shouldn’t be about politics’ or the opposite which is what they’ve gone for.

This is what I think should go down. England crash out of the World Cup but at least they’ve stood for something.
-
• #162914
All of them should get a One Love tattoo, would like to see how that would play out
-
• #162915
I'm disappointed that:
a) a colleague has organised a WC sweepstake; and
b) there's huge uptake. -

“we stand in solidarity unless it gets a bit inconvenient”?
More 'we stand in solidarity until someone gives us an excuse not to'.
-
• #162917
Like it or not, you'd think the vast majority of people are watching it for the sport and not the statements of solidarity
-
• #162918
It’s difficult.
You can and many feel that the human rights situation is abhorrent and disgraceful and should be mentioned every minute but also realise it is the pinnacle of the footballing world and still enjoy the football side.
Very fucked up to be put in this situation.

Isn't this just daily life brought in to sharper focus?
-
• #162920
Yeah it's a tricky one,
On one hand, don't hold the World Cup in Qatar because of human rights and shit LGBTQ beliefs and avoid so much hassle
Or, do hold the World Cup in Qatar and try and use it as a means to highlight issues, change beliefs and bring people together (and make a shit load of cash in bungs)
I do think the World Cup should be held in as many countries as possible, plays into the idea of a Carnival that pops up in a random location every 4 years and draws people from all over the world to it
-
• #162921
we've done one, but with money going to an as-yet undecided human rights charity.
-
• #162922
That's a decent touch.
I've just been asked where I'm watching today's match (small talk in a line managers' meeting).
"I won't go into it on this call, but this is where I draw the line" which was met with "I know where you're coming from..."
Don't bloody watch it then.

The UK government will be happy with this distraction from this story perhaps?
The Government of Qatar committed to a £6-billion package which includes 24 Typhoons, nine Hawk T2 Mk167 jet trainers, and a bespoke support and training package in early 2021…
The UK government could have linked the sale to an improvement in human rights etc but I can’t find evidence that it did.https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-and-qatar-expand-defence-partnership

Iran probably happy no one seems to be talking about their current nonsense.
Today more than any seems the best time to make some sort of gesture, at least, regardless of the "sporting consequences".
Could Southgate wear a full rainbow suit? (Only half joking)
This isn’t corrupt then.
