Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • Got some Bose quiet comfort jobs for the misses, the £200 ish (now £250 + versions), and yeah comfy, but for the money, the build quality and sound feels they provide is absolutely 'meh'.

Tried for a few hours to enjoy them but gone back to my 5 to 8 year old sony in ear (whichever their top in ear bud/sound cancelling was from back then, similar sort of price) and was instantly happy again. Not a high end set of buds, but comfy, they stay in, they sound like I want them to and they haven't broken in at least 5 years of use.

  • Have some pixel buds pro's for sale in the classifieds. New and sealed. Posting here in case anyone's been thinking of buying.

  • Utility Post: bought a pair of Jabra Elite 4 at the airport on way to hols back in July and have been very pleased with the sound, simplicity and battery life.

Didn't buy them as work out buds because I don't work out because i'm fat. Actually, I'm fat because I don't work out but we're getting off topic. I've lived with them for a few months now and reckon they're great for what I need, which is spotify, podcasts and calls on trains, trains and automobiles. Hadn't used noise cancelling before and It's pretty unobtrusive. Not sure it really does much more than properly fitted foam earpieces tbh, but it's all good.

    Thumbs up from me.

  • Utility post update: One of them died. Annoying. No abuse. *sideways thumb.

  • Looking for recommendations:

Bluetooth over ear headphones. No need for active noise cancellation.
Strict requirement for round, deep ear pads.

Something like, but Bluetooth, beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X

    Any tips gratefully received.

  • I had the Dali io4 and though I thought it sounded good it just didn't punch when listening to Dub et cetera. The Anker q30 (at about 1/3 the price) is what's working for me now.

  • I just got a pair of Anker q30 today. Been trying them out all evening and really impressed by them. Currently £61.99 on Amazon.

  • Am looking for some headphones. Bluetooth and active noise cancelling.

Predominantly to be used at night to block out noise (snoring, cars, souls crying out etc).

I find earplugs intrusive and painful so I think in ear buds would be similar.

So, over or on ear headphones that are comfortable to sleep in, any recommendations?

  • Have you looked at the Bose sleepbuds? In ear, but (allegedly) designed differently than trad in ear headphones for this express purpose.

  • I hadn't. What I really need is to try a pair on

  • Has anyone tried bone conduction earphones? Reviews don’t look promising for music listening so interested to hear any experiences.

Have tinnitus and found out recently that ear buds are not great as they sit directly by the ear canal so can make tinnitus worse or aggravate it. Not a fan of over ear cans and so looking at bone conducting phones for gym/travel/working in shared spaces.

  • I have tinnitus, my shure se535 IEMs have never given me any trouble, can wear them 5hrs+

  • As above, use Shures (se215) with foam tips and they block out so some much noise, can listen on a low volume all day.

Have some bone conducting that I don't use anymore, were OK running but you'd end up needing the highest volumes to deal with background noise. Can't be good.

  • @moocher
I had the original sleepbuds. Definitely smaller than most earbuds but I could feel them enough that I stopped using them after a few weeks. Was thankful when they abandoned them, did a recall and gave me back what I paid a year or two later.

Not tried the new ones though. I tend to play white noise if I need to mask outside noise instead

  • 3 or 4 years of usage of Aftershokz.
Previius micro-USB charged model replaced 3 times by Costco, then money refunded. The socket always failed due to moisture ingress resulting in minimal battery life
Latest magnetic charging model, Aeropex resolve this problem.

Very useful for cycling, as you have all the background noise(s), alongside whatever you choose to listen to.
    Recommended.

  • Nice. Thanks all. May start saving for some shures then.

  • Best corded monitoring headphones for pretending to be a good DJ?

Sennheiser HD25 were the standard go to last time I asked, ideally I’d spend <£100 rather than >£100 so as not to get moaned at.

  • Get custom made ear plugs that are made for sleeping. Works better then anything else I've tried. Really comfortable and block out better then anything else. Mine are pluggerz custom sleep

  • All earplugs? I’ve found that the Bio-Ears plugs (or unbranded equivalents) work well enough to attenuate sound to a level where I can stop stressing about it and sleep. £5. Silicone and you mould them to fit your ear, obviously.
I don’t think I’d be able to sleep with a sound input from headphones, regardless of how comfortable they are.

  • Bio ears were uncomfortable for me. I'll investigate pluggerz though

  • Still Sennheiser HD25. During lockdown Sennheiser themselves did a special offer on them, so I purchased a brand new pair for about 70 quid IIRC.

  • Recommendation for a basic set of earphones for sport (mostly commuting and indoor turbo)? Fine to have noise cancelling, but ideally it can be turned off

  • Ace. Thanks.

  • Please be genuine. Please be genuine. Please be genuine…

  • I’m not really in the market right now, but anyone familiar with or used these?
They have kind of an eco angle with their modularity.
