  • West Suffolk Conservative Association, Andy Drummond, who said: “I’m looking forward to him eating a kangaroo’s penis. You can quote me that."

  • Oh, saw andyp already posted that.

  • They could have I'm a Celebrity in Rwanda this year

  • These people are so far detached from reality, I think he thinks he’s gonna go in and in a few weeks come out as if he’s the darling and we were all wrong.

    Absolute fuckin clown

    It nearly worked for Boris.

  • Didn't Nadine Dorries also go on at one point in the past? Don't think it did much for her.

  • What about those in cabinet positions?

  • In fairness Hancock is just taking Jake Berry's advice.

  • Shocking that Hancock would do this. No thought for the people who sacrificed or lost so much over the pandemic who would prefer not to see him in the spotlight laughing and joking away.

  • Sorry, I'm not sure I understand. Was Hancock in the Sunak cabinet? Presumably he loses that gig if the whip is withdrawn.

  • I mean we've got this slightly odd situation where those in the cabinet are effectively allowed to sack off their MP jobs to run the country.

Morals aside; a couple of hours p/m in your directorish where your handlers walk you through your talking points doesn't impinge on your workload as an MP. Whereas a cabinet position does.

  • In wales

    Yes, especially there.

Oh, got it. I suppose the argument is that having your MP in a position of influence in gov't increases the likelihood of your area getting attention, so everyone benefits?

They will at the very least still be in Parliament participating in debates etc. I can't imagine Johnson ever attended a constituency surgery whether he was a minister or not.

  • Hancock knows that he's not going to be re-elected in West Suffolk. He's basically jumping ship.

  • Nah Sunak blanked him didnt he.

  • "Matt Hancock is six months away from dating a Cheeky Girl"

  • Hancock knows that he's not going to be re-elected in West Suffolk

Sidebar - when Hancock got selected by the local party for West Suffolk, it was very narrowly against Natalie Elphicke, the pleasant MP for Dover who was suspended from the Commons for trying to pressure judges to go easy on her convicted rapist husband. Don't have much faith in their record of selecting the right people for their shortlist.

  • West Suffolk is one of the safest Tory seats in the country, I'd be very surprised if it returned anything other than a Tory MP at the next election.

In terms of Tory support in Suffolk, things might not be as clear cut as you think. The people of Suffolk have lost a lot of services and funding over the last 12 years. They're also old folk struggling to adjust to overloaded GP practices and few face to face appointments being available. There is also a widespread shortage of physios, dentists and podiatrists in Suffolk Coastal and nearby constituencies meaning that lots of older voters are not getting the care they need. Not to mention care home difficulties.

Edit: They are also super pissed about Sizwell C and the wind power substation being built just inland.

Source: Opinions heard while with the Aldeburgh WI with my Mum in recent weeks.

Maybe you're right and it'll stay blue but I doubt it'll be a landlside like in the past.

  • I hope I'm wrong!

  • Also Kezia Dugdale

  • Sizewell isn’t in West Suffolk tho. If it were more east it’d be in the sea.

West Suffolk is wealthy farmers, country folk and the kind of poor market towns that have 20% turnouts at elections.

Thurlow, where Hancock lived, is largely owned by the Vestey family who got very rich a long time ago and are good at keeping it. It’s that kinda place.

  • Is Bury St Edmunds in West Suffolk? Saw a thing about a mobile dental clinic (maybe someone posted it on here?) which was originally intended for overseas aid working but is desperately needed here, so many people unable to get registered or get appointments. Pretty dire situation in an ostensibly comfortable town.

  • It isn't, it has its own constituency. The largest town in the West Suffolk constituency is Newmarket, I think.
