  • Amey had an iPad Air going for £250 literally 2 weeks before my wife announced she wanted one 😩

  • Ty oh have luck like mine - none! 😀

  • Anyone have tips where to look online for benchmark prices for 2nd hand macbooks?

My work has a range of them available for purchase, mostly 2017 Macbook airs i5 or i7 and range of prices depending on condition and spec, lowest spec & worst condition £250 i5 8ram to best condition & spec i7 8ram, 256ssd

I'm totally lost, and can't figure out if there is value to be had. I know close to zero about Mac's and want to get my first one, but don't want to be fleesed here. Is eBay going to be the best benchmark or is there some hidden market Place or refurbished store that I'm missing I can compare against?

  • I’d be looking at a remarkable 2 - you might be able to get one for around that price and it is way better for note taking that the iPad imo.

It is just for note taking and annotating docs mind

  • Is it foolish to just buy new a new iPad Air with education discount. Or am I just gonna be paying over the odds for little advantage vs second hand?

  • How much is the education discount?

  • %20 IIRC but annoyingly I can’t actually look at the educational prices until tonight as my wife needs to log in with her student details.
And it seems that the offer ends tonight.

  • The refurb store is about 15% discount I think, so could be worth looking there too. https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/refurbished/ipad/ipad-air

The only benefit I can think of buying new over used is warranty really. If you can find an almost new ipad from a private seller on ebay that's got healthy battery stats, you might save more.

  • Do you get student discount on the refurb stuff?

  • Hmm, I don't know actually. Great deal if so!

  • I updated my macbook to Monterey recently then also got rid of a bootcamp partition. Now the last couple of weeks it's not been booting right, I'd have to open the boot location selecter and chose the MacOS one. The windows one was still showing despite deleting the partition. Now it won't boot at all and in the recovery tool the HDD isn't showing at all. Has anyone encountered similar or knows if there's something I can boot from USB or something to repair it?

  • anyone have any experience with the new M2 air?

i am on a 2017-ish Air and I think its time for an upgrade through work. I love the portability/sleekness of travelling with it. However, its struggling with a few work tasks (data crunching mostly) now that I'm doing more hybrid working.

So do I go 14" Pro (32GB ram) or new M2 Air (24GB) ram?

I'll also be commuting into London with it for 3-days a week ... is the 14" too bulky?

  • I have an M2 air with the 24Gb of ram. It’ll shit on any day to day work task. I run 5 desktops with two teams instances, outlook, OneNote, safari, chrome, WhatsApp, messages, Soho’s controller and anywhere between 5 and 10 ppt and excel open at any one time without any hint of slowdown or heat.

Had a 16” M1 before that and glad I switched. So much more pleasant to cart to and from / around the office.

  • Yeah the toughest task I'm going to throw at it is some analyses through R, which could take a few hours on my current MB Air ...

  • I have an M2 Air. I've just had the screen replaced because the backlight was uneven. While it was away I switched back to my 2015 MacBook Pro and was shocked at how slow it was.

  • You know just last night I went to watch a show in a darker room for the first time on my M2 Air and noticed my backlight is terrible in two of the corners. Was the customer support process painless?

  • All fairly easy but took a bit of time.

I requested a support callback and spoke to someone. They offered to collect it or I could take it to an Apple store. Chose to take it in in a Tuesday evening. Showed them the problem and they agreed it was an issue and they sent it off. Picked it up 8 days later.

It was in recovery mode when I collected it which meant a 12GB download and took ages (3 hours maybe) but if finally booted and my data was still there. Time Machine might be quicker if you do that.

  • Not too bad then. Time machine sounds like a good idea.

I think I'll have to try the same. I don't know how it took me so long to notice.

  • doesn't sound good if you both had the problem! did the fix help?

a quick google suggests its quite common ....

  • Ir does seem like they have a production issue. I haven't really had mine back long enough to be sure but it seems fixed.

  • Need to reset my apple id password. Despite having access to the email it's registered to, a back up email address and my mobile number, it's going to take literally 15 days to reset my password! The fuck!

  • Was yours overly bleeding light in one or more of the corners? I wish I had my old MacBook to compare to make sure I'm not expecting too much from the panel, as I know they'll always be some backlight bleed. It's the kind of issue that's really difficult to photograph.
