  • My walls (and house Tbf) are all over the shop, can we call 2cm a shadow gap?

  • Anyone have any experience with this?

    https://corksoluk.com/internal-coating/

Will it have any effect on small cold room, asking for a friend. Seems to me much spend for little huge result

  • Or what might be better solution ?

  • That gap wouldn't offend me although I'd be tempted to attach some scrap wood wedges to the wall towards the back of the space if it's wobbling.

  • It looks grand. I had to zoom in to see the gaps at each side which centre it in the gap. You could, if you were minded to, get some wood ‘trim’ and fill the gaps but matching the colour would be a huge nightmare. Trim pieces are available in a variety of profiles and easy to work with (Stanley knife will cut them) but the colour - that could prove the biggest obstacle. Any trim I’ve bought or seen is white wood and grained to some extent.
TLDR - Looks grand - leave it alone - good job!

  • Move and blame it on the previous owner.

  • If there's no thermal conductivity data provided I'd be wary of any claims. @Simpson

  • If I've been instructed to make those gaps disappear I've filled with mastic and painted the same colour as the wall.

  • 8mm thick and you plaster over it. Surely you could achieve a similar result with cork tiles.

  • @Kurai @Airhead yeah can’t see this making much of a difference. Think mate is worried of loosing space and been put onto this as 8mm and thinks it’ll make a big difference, but likely won’t.

  • Was it @Hovis who stripped back their kids wall and then battoned and insulated with really thin insulation boards?

Obviously more than 8mm and more. Invasive, but you can work out what benefit is expected.

  • It was. That room was above an unheated room with a couple of external walls, so probably justified in doing it.

  • been tempted to do this but wouldnt be able to do it on every wall, would that make it pointless? i.e can do 1 of 2 external walls

  • thanks, could be this.. Might just wait and see if I've solved the damp source and see if it dries out rather than poking around anymore.

  • Cheers all.
Just screwed it down on its plinth and its pretty stable so guess its staying like that. Was tempted to fill the gaps with mastic or something but they are actually a little back from the walls, the door was meant to be flush against the chimney breast but I look to be about 5-10mm out. Scrap wood was another call but think there is at least 5mm variation in wall to cupboard so may be a challenge. Also the alcove narrows by 40-50cm.
    All good fun.
Now how many years is it going to be left unpainted?

  • Ikea and other kitchen places do a long strip 3m of sticky back infinite edge. Get them in a few colours. Very good for disguising small gaps that aren't easy to scribe or make a blank for. One side sticks to your furniture on the vertical face inside the gap, the other is a 5 to 20mm bit of silicon that just nestles against the wall. Used them a few times to good effect

  • There's some more technical information on this stuff here

    https://en.corksol.com/over-spuitkurk

  • Their site is slick but gives no information, even the Facebook page claiming 30% is a bit vague. I'll be willing to bet you'd get same outcome with something like seciltek ecocork and a weekend's work for a fraction of the cost.

  • Ohhh sounds interesting... do you have a link (ideas site is dire).

  • My search skills are poor, what's the forum approved mould covering paint technique?
Wash with bleach, a coat of Guardz then a coat of B.I.N then paint as normal? Its for a bathroom ceiling. Upstairs neighbours have previously flooded us. I reckon we need a new ceiling/full bathroom but id like to cover it up for the time being.

  • Thermal conductivity (lower better):

    PIR board: 0.022 W/mK

    "breathable"
    ecoCORK 0.09 W/mK
    CorkSol: 0.058 W/mK
    Insulated lime plaster: 0.178 W/mK

  • I'm pretty sure I used Cover Stain for that kind of thing. Seems OK a few years on.

  • I've been using this to cover water staining which is what normally results from flooding. If you have mould it suggests you have a problem with condensation in the bathroom or I guess maybe you've had flood water sitting.

I have used this one in bathrooms on clean ceilings that have had the mould cleaned off them.

    I shouldn't spend 10 minutes writing responses!

  • So 8mm of the cork stuff gives the same insulation as 3mm of PIR? Mmmm cosy.
