  • Surely a glass floor is the perfect compromise

    Embrace your inner pervert

  • Might fit @bobble ‘s height

  • Urinal with a view?

  • 6 months later I’ll move on here and start building the drawers today. Have to get ,into it‘ again after such long time, fall/winter is my DIY timezone.

  • Id add that all that white is a coward's colour palette as well. Unable/afraid to make any complex or clever colour decisions so just blank over in the name of style. Bit harsh but true.

Totally disagree with this. I'd say that sometimes the choice of more 'interesting' or 'bold' colours is actually compensating for a lack of good design choices in the rest of the room.

As @dbr says white puts more focus on the floor and the content of the room. I think some people avoid white because their stuff can't stand the scrutiny.

Also 'complex'/'clever' colour choices often look awful, or at least are VERY subjective/personal.

Don't get me wrong I don't like the place @chrisbmx116 posted, it's too white, too cold and the flooring is horrid. Lots of white and poor choice of materials is a bad combo.

  • Do it! Did you go with the hob in the kitchen island in the end? I hope so...

  • It's all subjective. Colours make me happy. I feel sad when I see an older place (pre early C20th) done entirely in white, but I'm sure plenty people would think my every-room-a-different-colour vibe fairly tasteless. Paint is also fairly cheap and easy. I don't really have 'good design choices' to showcase and I haven't done any work on the house, so paint it is.

  • I hear this suggestion from literally every client as soon as they see a floor/ceiling missing.

  • We haven’t actually made a final decision on that but no - the hob will be on the same wall as the sink. Neither on the island. It will be inset so that it’s flush which seems a weirdly uncommon thing to do.

  • How far off competing it would you say you were?

  • 1/2 way I would say, but now since the refrigerator & door is done it is more fun, building the drawers: I can work in the basement with the bench saw and it’s dado blades (awesome) & tools, and not crawling on the floor with the router.

  • It's all subjective.

That is true. But I don't believe this

I don't really have 'good design choices' to showcase

I'm not talking about spending big money or 'design centric' stuff or whatever, just nice things. Thoughtful touches. Restraint. I refuse to believe that there are no good design touches in your house.

    :P

  • I'm happy as long as you don't put a sink in the island. Feels a bit wrong to me having it on display. There's a reason restaurants with open kitchens hide the washing up area.

  • So customers don’t steal the spoons?

  • I’m glad you’ll be happy then 😇

  • Thoughtful touches.

Ornaments on the mantelpiece probably my most pleasing moment. They're a bit dusty though.

    Restraint.

That reminds me - you've never been to my house have you... (we should fix that). It's basically sentiment smushed with utility with a generous dose of hoarding.

  • Looks very promising; looking fwd to the end result!
I should also get back onto the projects shelved for spring/summer.
Nothing that scale anymore though; it's mostly furniture renovation.

  • Actually it was not that hard to get into it again – but break was good! Two things: a combination square is so handy to copy and paste measurements, and dado blades are great.

  • What they should have done and what the common sense thing to do is assemble the shower then mock it up / mark it with the you in the room

  • So fucking fed up.

Builder did his own plumbing near the start of the rip out which caused a huge leak

Their plasterer spilled laster which has made its way to the downstairs lights . Turning on the shared hallway light tripped flat 2's flat somehow and their macerator which flooded the downstairs flat

100% late (in week 6 of a 3 week job) and regrettably paid 90% of it. Also had to get my own plumber in at a cost of £410 to make it livable in due to them taking too long

  • What the fuck. Document all of this properly and don't pay another penny until everything is fixed. Ideally you should get back/knock off the total cost the £410 plumbing bill as well.

Very best of luck, I hope others here or people you know can assist with getting shit fixed and finished!

  • @bobble mate this sounds like a terrible experience for you. As mentioned above, make sure you document absolutely everything including any issues your neighbours have incurred. If you feel able to I would start to make it obvious that any additional costs are going to be paid by them (the builder) for their shitty work that you have paid to get resolved i.e plumber.

Are they any details such as FMB or whatever on their paperwork/quotes. Be useful to start to understand what kind of support you might have if chasing for compensation. Also any addresses so you can get a bag of frozen sausages...

How far off finished are you?

  • I'm trying not to be impressed with the light fitting "cast", but its pretty cool when you look at it.

  • I'd say 90% there. Trying to not raise stuff until the end tactically because don't want them to skimp, not finish it or half do anything (ironic I know).
I have a list of 10 things to fix/finish such as this wonky cabinet and not going to fully pay until the other flats are sound

Edit - I also have my list of shit stuff.
    Lateness / water leak / plaster leak / 5 weeks without a toilet /

Check this shower tray fitting. Rather than take it out as my rescue plumber said they'd need to, they just Stanley knifed it so it's bonded to the wall with plastic
