• It's not a silver bullet though. There's a little Corgi x Jack Russel that we see regularly since it was a puppy. The owners have been using a dog walker a couple of times a week since the beginning who takes the dogs out to forests and stuff, looks amazing in the photos. But their dog is still a dick who doesn't know how to play nicely.

  • I have lots of access to friends with dogs so intend to socialise her very heavily. Plus will be meeting lots of children from the start.
Trying to work out if a 3 hour drive to see some puppies in midlands is worth it. Suspect better to wait until some come up a bit nearer home.
Feel like we've agonised about this more than having children...

  • Surely being total dicks (at least for the first 2 or 3 years) is just standard for jack russels?
They're great when they're older and calm down in my experience. Less so before that.

  • We've got a 18 month old jack russell/border terrier, he was a total dick for about 6 months but now is a really nice wee friendly dog. We have really socialised him from young though so that's helped.

No matter what I've tried though his recall is meh, wee idiot.

  • Pics pls.
We had a border jack who sadly died before he was 1.

  • My loveable idiot whippet, Freddie. Far from perfect, but who is? Need to go back to basics with recall as his teenage ears have definitely gone deaf to me calling him back. He will end up in trouble one day with his bounding up to other dogs as he wants to play. So, back on lead till he learns to come back when called! Its probably my fault, had a lot on recently so training has gone out the window. Still, he is a good dog, friendly to most dogs, though seems to have taken a dislike to golden retrievers so some reason. He loves a good snooze & despite the awful puppy stage (like a velociraptor x kangaroo) he gets on well enough with the cat. So glad I have him, I'd be a mess if it wasn't for the annoying beast.

  • Handsome chap!

Thanks for your sympathies, it was a dark time in my life, and I still find myself bawling my eyes out over it.

We have a (full) Border Terrier now (my wife needed a dog in her life, I was against it) but it turns out he helped us both with the healing process.

  • I don’t really think you get it until you have a dog that if you lost them prematurely you’d be gutted.

It’s great getting home and they are there even if you’ve had a pure shite day.

    What’s your border called? Photos

  • Bosco.
He is a treasure. Always excited when I get home which is really nice.

  • Nice wee dugs they are 😊

  • Tell me about it, I randomly cry about Calvin all the time.
What a void. I'm sorry you had a similar experience, but seems like a very similar story as ours.

  • If any wants a dog collar I’m making some to help with vets bills.

  • My dog is itching like crazy at the moment from his sort tail area. We’ve tried oat shampoo, flea treatment, nothing seems to stop him unless you physical stop him. It’s been going on for a while now and there’s no visible sign of any bugs or mites or anything of that ilk. I can see it’s bugging him but not really sure where to go from here.

  • These looking incredible. A blue one for me would be great. If I measure my dogs current collar length would you need anymore info?

  • How are his anal glands?

  • Has he had a recent haircut or got any hair matts?

  • No idea. I wouldn’t know how to check.

  • Had a groom about 3/4 weeks ago. He is due a bath. But he’s very clean. A bit like a cat he’s always cleaning himself.

    But this is more nibbling/biting

  • First time meeting an Australian cattle dog in BPP on Monday (part blue heeler, part red heeler apparently). Owner described it as a Mad Max dog! Very strange but very handsome looking fellow, built like a tank and wiiiide. The poodle wanted to say hello, as he does with everyone bar huskies and black labs, but had to call him back as the other one was nervous. Looked as if he'd take off a leg if he nipped you.

I would think a lot of other rescues have puppies with the way things are going (and probably will over the next while)

  • Thanks, but I'm fairly deadset on staffie/staffie-cross. Unsurprisingly there's no shortage of older ones to adopt (and which I'd love to were it possible to have more than one dog), but a lack of puppies.
Also once you filter for 'can live with children under 12' most rescue sites seem to come up with nothing. Which I suppose is not surprising as they can't take risks.

That's weird as hell - how can they say an 8-week old puppy can only live with children 12 and over?

  • Ahh, yeah staffies/staffie crosses are great,
I think contacting different rescues and registering with them would help as sometimes the puppies dont even make it to the websites as so many people are in your position looking for puppies because of kids or potential kids.

The fact that they want that 8 week old puppy to rehomed semi-rurally and perhaps with a calm male dog, makes you think that they are a nervous/anxious dog and excitable kids would make that worse
