It worries me, things are already not good ATM in the UK and she has been a long and stable figurehead. And generally well liked.
Now she's gone too. So I don't feel so good for that reason. Bad winter incoming, lots of bad news and this on top...

Burn the aristocracy for fuel?

Andrew would burn forever, with all that lard and no sweat as a natural fire extinguisher, it is his national duty.

The nation will keep warm over the winter with all the warm thoughts about the Queen -

Is this a "most read" list or is it the Graun's editorial judgment?
-
• #77336
I think most read.

• #77337
Not sure whether that’s better or worse

To be fair, reading about corgis gives me way less existential angst than the actual end of the world.

even sad heartbroken corgi's ?

But they knew nothing of her status.

I don't get why things are getting cancelled because some pensioner died, like this https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uk-rail-union-suspends-strike-sept-15-17-after-death-queen-elizabeth-2022-09-08/

Harder to accuse them of being communists...

Yes, I don't really agree with it but it's smart from a PR perspective.

She was very popular and a lot of people think its the right thing to do.
I agree though, cancelling sporting events for a dead gran seems a bit weird. Each to their own though.

I was looking at various opinion polls on the Queen, taken by pollsters over the last few years (so not affected by her death). A few snippets (taken from different polls):
98% of people polled know who the Queen of England is.
82% of people polled think she does a good as monarch.
8% of people polled dislike the Queen.
62% believe the monarchy is a positive thing to be protected and continued.
12% of people polled think the monarchy is a negative influence on society. The Queen is/was popular. The Monarchy is popular (although becoming less so over time).
While I see the monarchy as a relatively harmless curiosity, I respect the fact that a lot of people are really attached to it and are probably grieving to some level at the moment. So fuck it, maybe Arsenal vs Everton being postponed isnt such a bad thing in the grand scheme of things.

All of this is largely in related to the queen herself than the monarch in general.
So when the queen die, I strongly feel people feeling toward the monarch will changes, especially as Charles is not exactly as popular as the queen.

He is pretty popular though, and considered pretty sensible and aware of lots of issues (environment, prices trust etc) The bad thing is he can't voice them anymore as king.

Those numbers are from both. The monarchy is still popular but declining in support pretty fast.
Interestingly, the high water mark for support for the monarchy appears to have been just after the Queen parachuted into the Olympic stadium in 2012.

I’d be keen to know the % of those 62% who are all in for her funeral costs including all the pomp, not to mention Charles’ coronation costs during current socioeconomic times. I know ‘tourism’ but still…

What happens to the biscuits? Duchy lemon shortbread is good gear.
South & Mids in the book, but I reckon he's probably been places he couldn't possibly write about.
