I joined in 2008, when there was a Sheldon Brown memorial ride that I was too shy to go on, but then I chatted to some people playing bike polo in Brick Lane and learned about East Drinks, and thought "Ooh, I can do drinking and talking bollocks about bikes".
Fun fact, According to the database I started the East Drinks thread before I joined LFGSS.
I didn't really. It was @somebody else :-D -

You should start a list.

wonder what our combined mileage is over the 15 years ( on bikes )
how many times round the world ?
how many times to the moon and back ?
what percentage of a light year ?
how many watts generated ? -

I've gone from, 200mi to 300mi a week and 7 bikes to 1 bike, 10 miles and a Peloton in that time.

I thought I was late to the party but now two years feels like ahead of the curve.
Not "the beginning" but reading criticism of shit riding in This Morning's Commute probably saved my life when I started commuting in London

Joined in Jan 2008 after seeing some fixed gear bikes (sweet fixies) around London Town. Loved the collective discovery of cycle brands bike tubes awesome 531 etc through ‘pengy’ $50’spoks, deep fake suicides (shock at the time) very sad OG deaths, white tires , lo-pros, njs onto chats about 40k kitchens, how we’ve all grown

Didn’t it used to tell you somewhere your member #? Was that before it moved to microcosm? I don’t remember. Anyway, I have lurked on and off for 15 years, and always wished I’d been more involved in the rides etc., but no longer in London :/

Yeah it did. Was just outside the 1k myself held some rep. Also bring back rep etc

I remember the first ride I went on which was from Hampstead Heath to Notting hill for Eilidh Cairns who was killed at Notting Hill Gate, without knowing anyone or what it was be like but was just so collective and felt at the time a proper coming together of cyclists who felt enraged of these kind of deaths. I’m sure there were more before that but it being my first felt in powering

I remember when all this was spoke cards….
Felt like we couldn’t have more than 6 people on a ride without something being printed. -

Was a critical mass 2008 me riding fixed and someone suggested I checked out lfgss and I joined
Then got bumped up to member #2 in an auction for lcef which I won beating @hippy in that auction for that spot.
I had inherited some dosh after my mum died so won the auction and ended bumped to #2 after vb
Joining date bumbed to March 2007
Microcosm upgrade fucked that up
My first post
I'm riding a Surly Steamroller...a lovely ride, great handling and control, however I can't stop as quickly in an emergency as i can on a v-braked hybrid(Slam on breaks. lock arms and weight backwards ). I have one brake and ride 48 - 17 gear. I am just able to skid back wheel but still takes me too long to stop...
Any tips?@d0cA suggested I get 2 brakes
Friendly place I thought

Velocity boy
Yup... Based on the first primal scream single velocity girl, but realising that velocity could be read as velo city.

Wasn't there one here too on that junction where that art hotel thing is happening

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the place, but I remember going there few times, they sold cans of Red Stripe and you'd sit on crates, boxes or anything else surrounded by the smell of weed, inside and out, ha the smoking inside days!I stumbled across this place in 2008 while looking for a single speed to commute on. Got sucked in, built first road bike in 2009, got a custom single speed in 2010 and the cycle has continued and I've had another 11 bikes since then. A crack habit would probably have been cheaper and with less gravel rash, but I think I made the right choice.

Cool to read the history. Think I was visiting by 2008/9 or something. Classifieds or bike porn drew me in probably. Have learned so much from the people on here. What year was the redesign?

I think between us we must have like 20 TCR rides alone and I'm currently on 180,000m of elevation gain this season just in audax.

Wait, you've climbed 20 Everests?
It would be a great idea if all of this could be captured in some sort of medium.
Like, y'know, a book.
