I've just got an Iiyama G-Master GB3461WQSU 34" ultrawide monitor. I've connected it to my M1 MBP via a Dell WD15 dock
The monitor should have a display of 3440 x 1440 however I can only get it to recognise 2560 x 1440
Is this as issue with the doc or the HDMI between doc and monitor?
The dock and cable I was given by my old employer. The HDMI cable looks like a generic one so I'm not sure of the spec - it just says HD 4K UHD on it. -

should be HDMI 2.1 for that rez.
if it works direct with display port then it’s the dock or cable. -
• #19530
Ok I guess I need a new HDMI cable then. Any type in particular or are they much of a muchness?

no idea! i only ever use display port as i have a high end Eizo graphics monitor.
will have to be HDMI 2.1 compliant whatever you get but try a direct display port cable to see if your mac will do that size display. -

Ok I don't have a display port cable either. Time to go shopping...again.

Not true. That resolution is just over 300Mhz bandwidth, meaning a HDMI1.4 port will suffice with reduced blanking, let alone HDMI2.0.
That monitor is sending a funky EDID, use Better Display to fix.

no idea, I never use HDMI as it’s not the best option for my monitor working in 16bit etc.
the specs say yes with caveats (30 hz not 60 or not full colour 4:2:0) only 2.0 or 2.1 do everything
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMIa least a 2.0 cable is future proof :-)

And people wonder why we pay extra for Apple kit 🙄

I need to backup a massive amount of data off a server -- are there any recs for drives that are ~16TB and can do a reasonably fast transfer?
edit: do I need something ridiculous like this?

I've offered to give my in-laws my incredibly old Macbook Pro, so they can try it out before committing to buying a new one (they've never used a Mac before)
It's an early 2011 MBP that I think came with Snow Leopard, and was the first gen Thunderbolt one. Obviously, I don't have anything that came with it anymore - am going to run into problems wiping it and reinstalling OS X if I don't have a disc? -

p.s. I'm really bad at computers, so ELI5

• #19539
I wouldn't bother. Just delete your stuff off it.

It's a ball ache but you can download that latest OS/X that runs (it's probably limited to Mojave?) as a dmg
-
• #19541
That is also an option, if there wasn't the strong possibility of me forgetting to delete the photos of their daughter on it they'd prefer not to see

So using an HDMI2.0 I can't get the max res or any 21:9 aspect ratio to work - even with Better Display.
Using a display port cable direct to the mac works fine. So it looks like the dock is the weak link. Are there any other options that'd allow me to charge and send the video signal through a single cable? -

is there a forum approved USB-C charger for a 2016 mbp? mrs would rather not shell out for an official one (i am encouraging her to but open to other ideas..)

Anker.

• #19545
I wouldn't chance it with a charger for something so expensive tbh, but if needs be, go with an established brand like Anker like Mr_Smyth says
-
• #19546
The Anker nano ones are good if 65W is enough.

I'm happy to charge from a dell monitor that costs in the same ballpark as an apple charger :)

Fair point! :)
Still a recognized name though. Probably anything with a known name on it will be fine, it's just the random no-name things one should avoid
would anyone like a quadlock iphone xs case?
