On the descaling note, if you've got a chrome plated machine (the Europiccola is chrome-plated brass), be sure not to get citric acid on it (or at least limit contact) as it'll take the plating off.
Not sure how quick or drastic it is as it fortunately hasn't happened yet. I don't think many machines are chrome-plated but it's worth baring in mind.

the Europiccola
On a non-descaling note, the join between the group head and boiler cylinder on my Europiccola is doing far more than just hissing a small bit of steam when I'm pulling a shot, and it's letting a lot of water out at times.
This is even after tightening the bolts every so often.
Do you / anyone else have this problem?

Always yellow bourbon. Code: DOASKID

Sometimes have a hiss of steam, but that's only when I've dosed too much/too fine and I'm putting a load of (too much) pressure through it.
When was the last time you replaced the gasket there? I think I've changed that one (I've definitely done the one in the grouphead so assuming I changed the one between the group and boiler), but that was maybe 2-3 years ago.

Any recommendations for one of those insulated cup coffee makers? My brother is after one.

I just took it apart - the o-ring seems fine, but the plastic piece that the siphon tube goes into is perished to the point of crumbling away.
I'll see if replacing that helps, but in the meantime, PTFE tape is cheap and plentiful.
I've considered making a paper / cork gasket bodge that covers whole surface. For £4, might be worth a look.

My wife has tried a few and her Built one is the only one that hasn’t been verbally abused on its way to the bin

On the plus side, at least with these machines you can be sure you can find each and every one of those parts for sale! I really need to service mine, there's nothing wrong with it at the moment but I'm sure they should probably be serviced more than once every 3-4 years with daily use!
Still, they're pretty resilient things, I'm sure mine will outlast me at least.

Have you got a link, my google-fu is failing me.
Cheers.

They're not as available as I assumed, seems to only be a few weirder places on the internet selling them and there are a few models. This is the one my wife has and rates:

Ah, wasn’t very clear in my post, I meant an electric single cup coffee maker with an insulated mug. (Writing that down makes me realise how vague I was before, lol).
Although he’s now thinking of going the aeropress route, which is likely a better shout.

I was thinking you were talking about those cups with a built in cafetiere:
But yeah, would just recommend an Aeropress/V60 into a flask/cup instead.

I have been trying - with some success - to get the Janglettes to appreciate coffee.
The youngest now has an aromaboy.
This morning I bought her a small bag of something from Square Mile.
How fucking expensive is that shit?

Re speciality roastery prices. A quick google of Square Mile, Workshop and Origin brings up very similar prices (bearing in mind Sq M are 350g not 250g). What similar quality companies are charging less? And have someone frequently visit the farms etc.

Ancoats Coffee do 350g bags for the same price as a usual 250g one
Thanks chaps. Ordered some puly for now but will investigate the diy citric acid option once I know what I’m doing
