  • @VeloSurMer - Is the EP8 Cargo Drive Unit (DU-EP801-CRG) available in the UK?

    https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/ep8-ep801cargo/DU-EP801-CRG.html

If so, what sort of price point?

  • Great to hear you’ll have a good harvest. I work for a drinks based creative agency and a few of our clients in the Provence Region have been hit hard due to crazy cold spring and then crazy heat/dry summer. I think you’re the better region for more stable weather! Good luck and look forward to seeing the more child friendly Douze.

  • As a stand alone kit? Not through Shimano I don't think, might be able to buy one from a dealer but usually each motor is registered to a frame.

Omnium's new V3 electric cargo (eCargo and eMini-Max now available to order) bikes do come with the EP8 CRG, the eBullitts don't specify which but they definitely are available now with EP8

  • New bike day!

  • I’m thinking of buying a used gsd with a broken enviolo hub. Does anyone have a rough idea of how much it would cost to put a new enviolo wheel in (the gates and everything else is fine)? Or, does anyone know if I could switch it out for a Rohloff wheel (and bits) instead? And roughly how much that would cost (parts wise, I can do the fitting)?

  • you need to talk to either @Vince or @sbbohr for that, I am guessing its a great deal?

  • When you buy a Rohloff hub it comes with all the other bits. I think they retail for about 1.3k or so depending on what arrangement you need. (Also you didn’t specify E14 or mechanical?)

If your bike fits enviolo it should have all the necessary routing for the Rohloff… Read the manual as it’ll tell you what you need to know for fitting.

Don’t know how much an enviolo hub costs. Do you know what’s broken about it out of interest?

Add onto whatever option all the wheel building bits you need and whether you’ll assemble the wheel yourself or pay for labour

  • Thanks @amey

I was actually speaking with Enviolo this week.

They are releasing cargo bike specific hubs at the end of September - capable of holding 100Nm of e-torque + 300kg of cargo weight - BEASTLY!

In the meantime, they have an Enviolo HD (heavy duty) priced at 220€. Fitting kit & bits come to about 80€.

    @urbs
Nuvinci & Enviolo are intercompatible so why don't you pick a cheap & cheerful Nuvinci hub or complete wheel on eBay?

This eBay seller has loads of Nuvinci parts

  • Don’t know how much an enviolo hub costs.

Here is a screenshot from my Enviolo trade account (you just need to be VAT registered to access)

  • Thanks, So cheap! 🥲.

If I was in Urbs’ position I’d wait for the ‘cargo line’ to be released if I was going the enviolo route. And either try and fix the one that’s in there (could just be the freewheel that’s gone.. maybe lol) or try my luck with a second hand one in the meantime.

  • Thanks all. That is super helpful.

On Rohloff, I was thinking of the e-14 version that tern spec. I just couldn’t find the retail costs, so assumed they go direct through shops.

Interesting to hear on the cargo enviolo, that might be a good option. Although I may just use the work that needs doing as an excuse to go Rohloff instead (we also have an old enviolo load and I hate the gripshift).

I don’t know what is wrong with the current hub as I haven’t had the chance to see the bike yet. I’ll know more tomorrow. [Edit: the bike is being sold by a tern dealer so it is otherwise new, just has an as yet unspecified problem with the hub. I assume it is not so easy as simple the freewheel otherwise they’d fix it and sell it full priced]

  • If the freewheel is dead, the pedals will spin without any of pawls engaging. No sounds or creaks.

Simple enough to replace it if you can locate the part.

Surprised they wouldn't diagnose & fix it.

  • That was my thinking also. But it doesn’t matter now. I spent the afternoon driving to Yorkshire for a wedding and in the meantime the bike was sold 🙃

  • Thanks, So cheap! 🥲.

Work with enough of them and you learn why - the internals aren't serviceable, they're only rated for 20,000km, and they often develop play in the axle that you can't do a thing about way before then.

CVT is such a cool concept, just wish Enviolo hubs were manufactured to a higher standard.

  • New Enviolo hubs are to be released at the end of September so that should sort out the quality standards.

  • Anyone got any experience getting a bullit on the roof of a hatchback?

I'm 95% sure I'm going to sell my omnium and buy a bullit as the family needs have changed a bit.

  • What will a bullit achieve over the omnium out of interest?
I think cargo capacity is similar

  • Rob at Really Useful Bikes in Yate services Enviolo and he’s a top guy

  • Yes, what would you like to know?
Rode more than 1000 km with a Bullitt on the roof of our car.

  • Forward facing low down child carrying is the big one. Carrying a little one on an omnium is I'd say 80%good. The fact that the bars punch them in face in a crash is a big downside

  • How did you attach it?

  • I guess that makes sense.

I didn't like the handling of the bullit when I borrowed one. I think it's the vertical head tube. Felt very twitchy and I felt unstable when taking one hand off to signal whereas the omnium feels much like a normal bike

  • Most long john have a vertical head tube, its the rest of the geo. Once used to it you can ride no worries. Omnium use a different ratio (its not a linear relationship, but done in kind of a basic way) so you can wobble bars around 10-20 degree's and front wheel doesn't turn as far as that.
They all feel weird if you go between a regular bike and a cargo, omnium is probably the most 'change between bikes' friendly ;)

  • £1k+ RRP, likely near a grand trade. And you cannot buy them trade. Only for warranty replacement, or post warranty 'do a deal' kind of a situation.

You must be an OE manufacturer of ebikes with the right bits of paper before Shimano/Bosch/Brose/Yamaha/Sport drive etc will even talk to you. Occasionally you will see folk selling drive units through ebay, never quite sure on their origin, recon units, found in a skip, excess supply (i.e. not enough frames could be made to use up all the contractually ordered drive units) or from that huge truck load of stolen motors end of last year, who knows!

eBullitts back in stock in reasonable numbers if anyone wants. 2022/2023 pricing in effect now though, so brace yourselves :S
