  • Remapping might make it easier to find faults or enable rear derailleur only function.

  • Fault finding is already done in the software and so is RD only feature, at least I presume so, how else do those single-button shifters work?

  • I thought you had to use an xtr derailleur to get rear only function?

I’d like to see completely interchangeable function between 9100 and 9200. It should be possible to use a 9200 rear on an 11 cassette.

  • To get RD only on a Di2 system all you need to do is not fit a front derailleur.

If you want to, the shifter buttons can be remapped to your heart's content using the standard eTube software.

  • It should be possible to use a 9200 rear on an 11 cassette.

Is the spacing from 11s to 12s the same? Then you'd just wind in a limit screw I guess. But if the spacing is different, I'm not sure. I'd be questioning who has the money for DA rear deraillers but not 12s cassettes.

Some compatibility exists but mostly 12S is a new world.

  • That's what I thought - because they sell the single button shifters, it can't be that tricky. My TT bike doesn't have a FD but I left the normal shifter and cable in place in case I decide to go back to 2x.

  • Yeah you can change any of the 3 buttons on either lever to shift whatever you want

  • Button 3 function successfully changed to "Get Beer".

  • Remapping car/motorcycle engines is common, yet strangely nobody has hacked di2.
It surely can’t be that difficult for the right people?

You wouldn't think so; the one I mentioned has busted out some pretty impressive stuff.

  • Remapping engines gets you more power, efficiency, top speed, blah blah blah. Fiddling with Di2 gets you... ?

Mad props. But also, the e-tube program is a bit limited; I'm sure there's a small number of folks who bump up against those limits. Also, it would be pretty sweet to have adjustment presets for different wheels which don't have the cogs in exactly the same place, or even a different number of them.

  • I have a couple of Shimano wheels with 11 speed cassettes.
If I buy a bike with 9200 I want to be able to use them. I am not going to buy 12 speed cassettes when I have half a dozen 11 speed cassettes in the basement.
If I break a 9200 rear derailleur I want to be able to put any di2 derailleur on as replacement. The exact replacement is not always available.

  • Yeah, screw arbitrary code limitations. It's my hardware, I'll run whatever code I want on it.

  • I want a toilet made of gold. We don't always get what we want.

Progress often means some stuff gets left behind. New cables, more cogs, etc are physical limitations to compatibility. Look at their spline design - they make an effort to maintain compatibility but they can't look after and test everything.

  • Yeah, because why would a commercial enterprise want to protect their products.

I mean, by all means, hack whatever you want but don't blame manufacturers from protecting their products in the first place. I'll keep my sealed Di2 all nice and waterproof and boringly stock, thanks. :)

Now, if it was sending my personal details back to Shimano like my phone, then I'll have at it...

  • Im 100% confident that I stumbled upon a guy who was making his own custom PCB's to connect into di2, and was selling them at about $50 a pop. Cant find it for the life of me. But its out there.

@hippy Im sure Shimano is collecting data on gear combos most used...etc, and carefully evaluates this data to bring to market the exact opposite of what people want :)

  • You say that but look at what I've run over the years.

28T was the biggest you could find and fit on mechanical SS cage DA, go long cage you could get their 32T, then 36T (actually that was SRAM, Shimano only do 34T unless you went to MTB kit), now I'm managing to stick 40 and 42T MTB cassettes into (long cage) road deraillers.

  • Sif I was bagging Shimano for that - it's capitalism I'm hating on.

  • Can't ev en riead that

  • The capitalism that bought you Di2 in the first place? The irony is strong in this one. Maybe you'd prefer communist Di2? I can provide a knackered Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub free of charge. Probably not sufficiently useless, but it's close enough.

  • Im sure Shimano is collecting data on gear combos most used...etc

Maybe your shifters need a tinfoil hat? You read it here first....

  • While they cant necessarily get "gear combos most used" from this, the can defo get most popular cassette / crankset combos. E-tube data protection notice

Edit: this is for e-tube professional, which I happen to have downloaded for some reason, not sure about the other version.

  • As if technology depends on capitalism; get off the Koolaid.

    Technology sucks because of capitalism.

  • Does the 12 speed chain work fine on the 11 speed cassette?

  • For anyone interested (nobody) it was the wire between junction A and B that was caput.
Which thankfully is the cheaper of all of the parts to have failed but annoyingly means I will need to disconnect my rear brake and rebleed it if I want to neatly heat shrink the new one the way I had it before.

  • Don't do that then. Use self-amalgamating tape instead.
