Mind if I tag along? Need to ride the krampus and decide if I should keep it. You can laugh at me being fat but stubborn. Will organise a Prestwich or Littleborough ride in exchange.

Under absolutely no circumstances can you tag along

• #204
Seems fair. Wanna buy a large Krampus?

Either works for me! I won't be at the dnb ride

Same.
Prestwich used to be a regular evening thing for me and would finish at The New Oxford. Lot further to ride home after now, will have to be quite restrained given the selection.

Maybe next weekend if coffee the preference?

Took this out for a little tester ride last night along the Mersey and around the surrounding trails, really loved it. There's a chance the big difference was in the gearing and that everything else was marginal but it's nice to have fast tyres when it's hard and dry out. The bar-ends are always fun to get into a tuck on.
The drivetrain makes a hefty clang every now and then? I reckon either the chainline is off or the 15t I liberated from a cassette is a bit knackered. I've got lots of spacers from the cassette to try and tune the chainline at least.
Was surprised by how fast it handles, it's very nimble and almost twitchy. I imagine it's a world away from how super slack HT might feel. Got home and had to actively suppress pondering longer forks.
Anyway:

Don't change anything looks great.

I'm thinking 32:16 and 28:20 for dinglespeed on this - any thoughts?

• #219
Are you thinking of a gear for round here and a gear for a day in the peaks or a pair of gears to do that in one go (if that makes sense?)?
28:20 seems kinda low. I know a couple of people who went down that route when they were training for ridiculous long distance/loaded stuff, their thinking was it would be easier on the knees over several days/they'd make up the time in other ways. In the end they both ended up doing their things with gears 🙄.
I don't think I ever went below 30x21 on my karate monkey, but I was younger, stronger, had less commitments, could easily catch the train out into the hills for a fiver and it was pretty much downhill all the way home.
Edit: I might still have a bunch of spare cogs and chainrings if you want to try a few things out before making purchases.

I'll be going 30x21 on my Krampus with 2.6in tyres. Ran 32x21 in the past with 2.8s which was too steep for the trails around me.
Conversely I found 32x14 to be spot on for flat, tame stuff (couldn't get up Middleton Top though!)

Good data, thank you! The intention is to have 1 gear for local (flat, muddy) and getting out to the Peak District (Dark Lane & Middlewood Way) and another for bimbling about in and on the hills when I get to them..
2.2 32:15 = 61.53" (currently fitted - 'gravel bike')
2.4 32:16 = 58.58"
2.4 28:20 = 41"2.4 30:21 = 41.88" (atk km - guessed tyre size)
2.6 30:21 = 42.45" (Po krampus)
2.8 32:21 = 45.73" (Po too steep)From this it looks like the numbers are in the right ballpark? From what I've found out touring on the surly, when I'm up on the tops on singletrack etc I just bimble about in a v low gear, hence the 28:20

Otherwise gonna put the MTB tyres back on and try the alpkit loop bars for a bit more long-day comfort
-
• #224
I guess 28:20 just sounds a lot lower than it actually is!
Will have a look in the cellar this evening.
Edit: good guess on tyre size too

Found several 74 BCD rings, but nothing in 64 I'm afraid. Think I have given away all my spare cogs too. Sorry!
Yeah definitely! We could do coffee & ride? We went the other week on a Wednesday and I limped around on the surly so keen to give it a go on this
