    Two reasonable explanations:

    1. He wanted to contact his original family and realised doing so would draw attention (and might see him prosecuted and/or deported), so got his account out first.
    2. He feared his real life story would be discovered (potentially leading to prosecution/deportation) and decided to get his story out first, for which purpose he contacted his original family to add touching human interest.

    The most remarkable thing about his life is going from civil war refugee to domestic slave to famous Olympic sportsman. There's nothing remarkable about this placing him in the situation he now faces.

    I hadn't even considered this bit. As @Stonehedge says this might be a catalyst for a changing of attitudes or even the law if he gets a high-profile exception.
