Advice please. I’m attending a wedding in the countryside later this year. I plan to wear this. Apart from a pair of winklepicker Chelsea Boots, I don’t have any thing smart / formal in black
I like to go with simple loafers or wing brogue shoes not boots, is that even possible?.. suggestions welcome. Circa £150

There are a mad number of lacings - some for fashion, some for practical reasons/fitting. If I find a pic I have I will post it later.
Edit. Google boot lacing patterns and look at the images.

How have you got to your age without a pair of plain black shoes?
If you the brogues in black, (post below/above) then you will be fine, but best to give them a nice polish.
As it the countryside where you what you want, my recommedation is wellies.

oh yeah? I've been trying to find a reason not to give them a go... do you have any photos of yours you would share?
EDIT: found a reason - they're out of stock... last time I looked they had them in a dark brown suede which would be my first choice
Cheers!

thanks all, maybe I have a problem with black shoes and black socks.. wedding is set in a fine Georgian Country House, with gravel drive, landscaped gardens..
i should just rethink this.. choose a decent semi brogue or loafer and paul smith colourful socks.. that go with navy worsted wool suit..
jeez, this is gonna end up in the LFGSS golf club chat..

"How have you got to your age without a pair of plain black shoes?”
it’s easily done, i don’t work in an office and i have never been to a black tie event.
black shoes are for school or working as an undertaker or policeman.for the above mentioned wedding i would wear a pair of George Cleverley RTW Adam in dark brown Scotch grain leather with a navy suit.
maybe buy something in dark brown sued if it’s hot and a linen suit. tie/belt square picked to work with the shoes.would probably look far smarter than the majority of blokes there wearing their pair of dusted off court appearance shoes.

To add to this, personally I don't think you can go too far wrong with a pair of plain black Toe-cap / Derby's. I have a pair of Loakes that are now probably now 20 years old and only really come out for this sort of occasion i.e. Weddings / Funerals and anything else formal. They don't go out of fashion and it means I never have to think about it. EDIT: with the added bonus that you're not going to look like a) an estate / recruitment agent b) 'that guy' c) dusted off court apperance guy (if you take even the basic steps to look after them) :-)
Having looked Loake seemed to have gone up in price a lot since I bought mine (!) but there are these for example from the factory shop or others at a higher price point if commando sole is not your thing:

Navy suit I think you can wear what you like as long as they’re in good nick. I’d avoid overly jazzy socks though - a complementary tie/pocket square combo is more than enough.

No one should ever wear black shoes and black socks. It’s a big sartorial no no

With all due respect that’s bollocks

Thanks all.. I did check out Loakes circa £165 and Cheaneys circa £400 today just off Cheapside..
what ever I buy will need to be well made, versatile, more than a dress shoe.. I may consider more spend, summer sales also about to hit soon.
my pointy Chelsea boots from pied-a-terre are still fine for black tie and have held up for over twelve years.. not that I attend those events very often.
I reckon I’ll end up investing in a solid pair of goodyear welted brogues in either dark brown or burgundy, as I have an array of jackets and trousers these should go with.
Tan Cheaney and Belstaff boots have seen a lot of action for 10 years mostly worn with jeans.. both had heel repairs since.

Wear what you want - it’s all personal preference. If you’re buying shoes, I’d go for ones which you’re most likely to wear most often.

Good leather sandals, Hereu seem a little costly any other suggestions?
Any ideas how I clean these sandals. They aren’t dirty as such. They just stink. I don’t even have smelly feet so can’t figure it out.
