I wanted a front rack but the ones I like are too pricey. I had this very old steel rear rack, donated years ago by an old neighbor, who would pick up old bike stuff from skips/bins and give it to me knowing I'd make use of it sooner or later (RIP Peter!).
Before butchering the rack I made sure it wouldn't fit on the rear first, but I think it was originally intended for bikes with smaller than 700c wheels.
I re-proposed a crap mild steel spanner (the ones that come with Ikea furniture), a bit of cutting and drilling...
Then, to the best of my (very limited) abilities at brazing, I attached the spanner to the rack, and cut the struts. Hop! I now have a front rack, or, officially speaking, a fear rack. I'll be checking that brazing on regular basis to save on dentist bills... (though it feels strong enough and I don't plan to carry heavy stuff.
