I had something similar at an old flat.pretty sure it was in the sealed off unaccessible basement under my house.

Still have flashbacks.

I meant cost. Some of those smoke alarms have sealed batteries as there's plenty of people who can't afford a tenner to buy a new one. Or even a fiver for a battery.

It's a possibility.
