  • A question for you people: since I went vegan, I have donated all my existing leather and woollen clothing items, including my sofa, to charity shops . The only thing I have left of this nature is my Volvo 940, which is 25 years old and has half leather seats. I bought this secondhand for £500 before I went vegan (in fact, bought it before I even went veggie).
I will no longer buy new or secondhand non vegan items because I just can’t bear the idea of it now, but in the case of my car, is it generally accepted amongst vegans that you keep it until it eventually expires, then buy a cloth interior car next, on account of the higher cost to replace it, environmentally better to keep an old car going, there’s no such thing as a 100% vegan car anyway, selling won’t bring the poor animal back etc arguments?
I only buy secondhand cars anyway so forget dealers/cost of new car manufacturer aspects here etc.
Besides the half leather interior, and the fact I cycle more miles annually than I drive, I love the car. But I don’t want to be a hypocrite by keeping it.

I've been here, can confirm it's good!

  • Keeping it doesn't make you a hypocrite. You already own the car so just keep it and make a different decision once this car is done.

  • Keep the car for as long as possible. If you need a car then better for the environment to keep that one running. I see no hypocrisy here

  • When I stopped buying animal products, I wore some leather shoes and belts until they were done, because the damage had already been done and it would have been wasteful to bin them. Gave some to homeless charities as well, as they often have needs for sturdy shoes for street homeless and smarter ones for people looking to get back to work.

Didn't feel this was hypocritical at the time, and think you'd be doing the right thing in using the car until it's done.

Great novel, can't believe it didn't make the Booker shortlist.

  • Anyone been to Berlin recently and have any recommendations for food or cafes? Been 6-7 years since I was last there. I know Yellow Sunshine has closed. Will call by Voner, Veganz, Brammibals donuts and the ice cream + waffle place I can never remember the name of. Expect to be passing through most of the main neighborhoods at some point.

  • Yoyo Foodworld is good for some trashy burgers and diner-style stuff

  • Is @salad-cunt in Berlin?

I still recommend Baraka for Moroccan food (both in-house as well as sandwiches to go), they're directly at Lausitzer Platz (left to the huge church), U1 Görlitzer Bahnhof, https://g.page/restaurantbaraka?share

When in Mitte (around Alexanderplatz) there's Dolores Burritos (Californian / Mexican style), just been there again the other day and had a "Vegan Lover" burrito - it was really good, as always. https://g.page/DoloresMitte?share
They also seem to have a second one at Wittenbergplatz, I have never been though.

For quick snacks / morning-after treats around Schlesisches Tor there's the little "Zazza" bakery (at the corner Schlesische / Falckensteinstraße), lots of vegan food and sweets, plus great coffee - https://goo.gl/maps/2GXDLbTSWxf67K2v8
..there's a couple more cafe's called Zazza around town (it's sort-of a frenchise of a local roastery), basically all of them offer great coffee, and most of them offer nice vegan snacks as well.

If you tell me where exactly you're at maybe I have some more recommendations 👍

  • I'd forgotten about Delores! Glad to hear it's still going strong.

Good call on the Baraka. We're staying near Gorlitzer Park and will have walked past it a number of times on previous trips. Will keep an eye out for any Zazzas too!

  • We went to Chén Chè for Vietnamese. It was lovely. Also a big fan of all the vegan currywurst 🤤
But in general, Berlin is crowded with vegan options.

  • Just culturally appropriated my way to a very tasty "Mexican lasagna" was pretty fucking banging and very messy.

  • Preferred the original branding, thankfully the donuts have not changed.

  • Rice in lasagna? Strong

  • Mexican lasagna, gotta have rice, along with refried beans, a mince, bacon and black bean filling and cheesy cashew sauce and salsa Verde separated by tacos and topped with nachos and cheese.

  • I don’t see this as being hypocritical at all.

I have some wool jumpers and leather belts that I bought before going vegan. I’ll continue to use them until they eventually wear out.

  • I still ask for the occasional merino sock for xmas, my level 4 vegan certificate will have to wait.

  • that looks divine ! Nice wee tin of engevita in background

  • Does anyone know of any of brands/stockists that sell these (or something similar) please?

  • Last one for me, closes Sunday but stock so low they may be closed tomorrow (so they can open Sumday)...
