not fantastic range however.
As most of my day to day driving is school runs, and short travel appointments

Yeah, I should have added that we go an see the in-laws in Normandy at least 6 times a year, along with a smattering of UK family trips and hobby related journeys.

in-laws in Normandy
The ferry companies should add EV chargers. Would make the longer crossings more attractive.

This would be amazing! Though how you would organise getting parked near a charger on the boat would be a problem.
Probably just a matter of time. Use some of those monster Diesel engine power to charge some cars…

I'm with DL, they said I could get an EV if available, one was not, in fact there aren't any in Aberdeen, plus I never paid for the extra like for like courtesy car premium either so am probably lucky with what I have!

Not really. They already have priority parking for some groups. For example when my mum was using a wheelchair after breaking her ankle we were put in a space next to a lift.

At least it isn't bunker fuel. Apparently some ferries are LNG now.
Presumably the current boats don't have enough surplus electricity generation but perhaps the next lot will.

Changing maritime fuel regulations is one of the most glacial processes I have come across.
I was lucky enough to have a chance to visit the IMO and UN to watch the last few voting stages of the following law change to happen. Apparently it took 14 years of negotiations involving all member states just to agree to regulate the amount of Sulphur in fuels. Madness.

RAV4 is now a big, ugly brute of a car. No smaller options if it's mainly for school runs?
-
• #785
It definitely looks like an SUV!
We somehow manage to fully load a Volvo V60 and a roof box on a week long trip to France with 2 small adults and 2 smaller children, so I think we would be annoyed if luggage capacity was less.
A smaller EV wouldn’t save me much money per month at current prices, with reduced practicality for longer journeys.
I have no idea how my parents took my sister and me on trips to Europe in a Peugeot 206…

12h 40mins to cover 1,038km today. Cambridge to the Lot valley.
4 charges (last one was only 5 mins).
Fully loaded boot, sub boot and frunk with passenger.

Avg moving speed around 59mph.
Efficiency of 304Wh per mile which is nuts.

Same problem here....but taking bikes as well. Looking at the Skoda Enyaq.....but will have to wait a year :(
-
• #789
Oh yeah, I’ve left a bike at the in laws in France because we’d never have space to take the bikes too.
I’ve been looking at leasing, and the Enyaq doesn’t come up great value, though does tick all the space boxes. The Kodiaq was a front runner before I got the v60 last time round.
Model Y looks to have the most storage, but again not the best value option, and would end up spending £200 a month more for it than the RAV4 plug in.
That’s a lot of petrol. -

On the car itself doesn't seem like the most logical place to put solar panels given the space constraints for the sake of not having to plug in one cable as often.
A static solar array at home with perhaps induction charging in the driveway would be nice -

why is this thread not called "Electric Cars" ?
I want to see interesting Electric Vehicles that are not built for Drivists -

We have a(n old, small) Fabia and manage to squeeze us (2 adults and 2 kids) and stuff in for a week holiday and whenever we talk about needing more space always come to the conclusion that we'd fill the car, whatever size it was!

There was an e-bike dressed up as a mini classic motorbike here a few weeks ago…

Agree, this thread disappoints. It's still about cost savings for the owner, appearance, performance. Not a lot on reducing emissions & congestion.
-
• #797
It’s strange seeing this commentary here rather than on the much more populated car thread where there is even less consideration for congestion or emissions.
Maybe it’s just edgier to hate on EVs?
All this energy (no pun intended) could be put to better use converting classic car owners or people with holiday vans to cargo bike zealots…
In terms of disappointing people on the content of a thread, perhaps the climate change thread is more appropriate for broader conversations on emissions and congestion solutions.

I think it's more that so many places are presenting EVs as the solution (or at least a large part of it) and good for the environment rather than just a slightly cleaner part of the same problem.
I know my council rolls encouraging EV takeup into the sustainable transport plan for instance.

Time for the regular reminder that the only thing EVs save is the automotive industry.

the car thread is called car thread, it's for drivists
I already have an electric cargo bike that's more practical than the traffic-mobiles on this thread. it's not an "electric vehicle" it's a bike.
where are the interesting electric vehicles that inspire nicer lives for us all?
@andyp hitting the nail on the head
In reality for most of my driving I could have a little run around, but we also drive to France every 6 weeks or so, so range anxiety is real. As far as I am aware, EV chargers in France are not bad, but if I went for a full EV, it would need to be one of the long range versions with 77kw batteries or more.
