  • That’s a beaut - matching pedals is another level

  • Jealous of that paintjob !

  • Can't remember what your one was ? a photo maybe to share with the people ?

  • @JamesPaletti nice! Those pedals match the frame perfectly, look forward to seeing that built up.

I emailed Somec to try and get more info on my frame, Lara from Somec replied back to say they unfortunately don't have detailed records of the past, but she did confirm it was definitely a Mario Martini paint job as suspected.

To help with the dating she instructed me to take a pic of the Somec decal on the down tube and look for any 'World Champion' writing....

...I could see the Italian flag t one end of the decal and the World Champs colours at the other end but no writing....but hang on, in the C of Somec... enhance

So Lara said this dates the frame to 88/89 or possibly early 90at the latest, which is a few years earlier than I thought. I was not aware Somec even sponsored riders back in the day, and my google-fu is obviously very weak as I can't find any mention of any Somec World Champs in 88/89 for men or women in any cycling discipline. Anyone help out with who this was?

Anyway here's how it looks now, I've added 2 silver bottle cages and swapped the pedals to some NOS Look Delta's to match my other shoes.

I'm now thankfully rolling on clinchers thanks to the purchase of @HoKe lovely Mavic Cosmics, and thanks also to @bjj22 who I met yesterday as he had an exact set of Cosmics, and we did a freehub and cassette swap so I'm now running Campag and he got the Shimano freehub he wanted, so that worked out perfectly, cheers gents, everyone's a winner!

So here's how it looks now, I'm going to scratch an itch I have and see what it looks like this weekend with yellow tape, saddle and pedals, but if that doesn't cut it I'll be back to black.

Oh and other good news, Campag Delta's can accommodate 28c tyres. who knew! So I've got a pair of 28c Veloflex Corsa Evo's in there which make a dreamy ride dreamier.

  • Fan-tas-tico! Now just to get rid of that terrible fizik thape and get a hold of some pelten shade yellow 😁

  • haha, cheers. I've never heard of Pelton yellow, got some yellow tape on the way, its Fizik tho...;)

  • Lol rather you than me :) I've had bad experience with the fizik tape, the lack of elasticity was very frustrating...
The pelten shade white/yellow may work very well with your dream Somec. It's super durable and easy to keep clean as well.

  • Ah cheers, not sure the yellow to white fade would work, and will give me saddle and pedal matching angst :)

Also cant see any in stock on a 10 second google. Cheers for knowledge bomb tho, Pelten Shade, sounds like one of Snake Plissken's mates.

  • @user75204 As far as paint jobs go you have THE somec my friend - what a find. So many ways to color it up and I love the way you put it together. I don't know a lot about the history myself unfortunately.

  • Cheers dude, this ones a keeper for sure.

Although Somec said they don't have detailed records, Lara ar Somec was super helpful so may be able to help you find out some info.

  • absolutely superb dude. not that I expect anything less.

    lovely

  • Missed this, many thanks dude :)

I felt the black tape, saddle and bars were a bit safe, so have decided to go as rowdy as the rest of the frame by swapping the black for banana yellow. Reckon its turned out alright so I'm going to stick with yellow.

In answer to the question I posted above about who was a World Champion for Somec, I posted the question elsewhere and someone kindly replied back with the answer. Monica Bandini, who was part of the team who won the 1988 Women's Team Time Trial. Monica rode for the Ricci Ceramiche-Somec team from Lugo. Sadly it appears Monica died last year aged just 56.

  • Yes. even better with the yellow. awesome

  • Looks fantastic

  • @user75204 that yellow really goes well with the bike i love it ! Really good pop of color.

Heres my Sirius, almost finished, still a few things to sort out, will probably go for campy tt shifters if i find the right ones.
Also need a nice bottle but not sure if i try and find something aero or just plain old round ones.

Then its just cables, cassette, bartape and we're ready to roll !

Also started putting together my Fuego, which seems to be a custom order with ultrafoco rear chainstays (Somec havent replied to my email yet).

Both bikes are full campa record ti 9s, my favorite era for bikes with one of my favorite groupsets !
