I'd call it electro. But I'd also probably think it was new, since I wasn't listening to electronic stuff in the 80s and don't have a great deal of electro in my collection. Yeah, I'd just lump it in with electro for sure.

It's a tricky one. Gut feel says electro, technically it could fit in Techno definition though.
Planet Rock ('82) is a definitive electro track of it's time, that sound was using samples from funk like Hip Hop has done. Over the next few years there was a thread of Electro of this type, gradually moving towards a sound without samples, made purely by electronic instruments.
By '88 we were seeing Oakenfold and crew coming back from Ibiza, throwing parties in swimming pools then onto Land Of Oz at Heaven etc. This was full on Acid House but for a while you would still hear Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax at midnight. Also look at the Soft Cell 12" stuff to see where electronic pop was. Depeche Mode had been using a lot of electronic effects and sampling too.
Then Techno developed really fast in hindsight (Energy Flash '90), also with electro-techno like LFO - Frequencies alongside.
The whole '88 thing was massive in the UK for anyone who lived it. The first time people were necking pills en masse and it seemed like time stood still for a while! By '90 it was dog on a rope/spiral tribe nomads and the whole country if not the world was raving.

&v=BxxuPBu-ATk..think I posted a track of this already a while back, just thought it fit's nicely in the "what genre is this actually" talk right now

Someone definitely did, because I have one of the tracks off that in my Favourites.
That's more techno than electro for me.
Ah yes, it was Vivre Beaucoup. I really like the big stabs in that. Listening now it reminds me of Eric Prydz stuff

There's also a sweet Kalkbrenner remix of "Invisible" I just realized

Ha, that's also funny. I was watching that thinking "I've seen this thing before but it was with a lad, not two women, wasn't it?". I must've watched the original version of the track when you first posted about NTO and it is the same concept but with a guy. :)

Another NTO track with a film-like music video:

Of course Orbital went on to release this seminal piece of Techno. At the time it stood out as something new, partly because it was so sparse.

I'd say Chime is British Acid House music TBH
-

I was just dangling that in the water tbh :)
I used to play this one for friends at after club parties. I love Acid House but the chords were different. At the time we used to play Evil Acid Baron Show in the background.
It's hard to come up with the first track I heard that I would describe as Techno. I do still see Acid as a form of Techno rather than House as it has no sampled disco elements.

Someone has always had a go at these big questions first. I've not read it yet but here's a paper on Orbital - Chime :-
They don't address the genre that specifically.

Ha ha! That's brilliant thanks for linking!

Yeah I reckon most of nto (and the other hungry artists, for that matter) sits firmly in what I've heard called "melodic techno".
On that topic, I'm off to see Bodzin tonight at fabric. Might be amazing or I might fall asleep half way through. Not sure which day it'll go π

Hungry did an awesome night at ADE 3 years ago. Westerunie, crazy swinging lights. That's about all I remember π

Random observations on the electro/techno thing; I grew up with the Streetsounds Electro series with number 4 featuring both Run DMC's Sucker MCs and Cybotron's Techno City. There was definite blurring of the lines between electro, early hip-hop and proto techno back then.

Have that one too. I was into Herbie Hancock - Rockit too.
Techno City gets labelled as an original Techno track but it does have a funk groove and lacks a looping acid line making it a bit more Electro.
Techno or Electro? just for fun :)
