  • I must admit I’m beginning to question the sanity and economics of building a partscaster. I’m only 120 quid in on a cheap body and neck so far but paint is gonna be 60, hardware a couple of hundred, pickups and harness up to 300 if I want something decent… I know it’s all good fun but when you can pick up s/h squier for 80 in fully working nick, it does seem insane .

  • It’ll be noticeably better than an £80 used Squier, though.

If you want to cut the price then you can wire it up yourself, and look at the mega-cheap AlNiCo pickups you can find on Amazon for £25 (I put an HSS set in my old Strat, they sound great).

I usually default to buying Creamery pickups (and they’re cheap, for hand-wound boutique pickups), but the Amazon cheapos were a real surprise.

  • Ok so I think i've finished having the internal debate about the quality of kit i'm going to put on the strat build. My instinct was to buy the best quality bits i can afford but i've reasoned that the body is basically trash, the neck is cheap and cheerful and it'll be my first attempt at finishing, so i'm going to go budget. Not crap, just that i'm not going to order anything new or fancy. I'll trawl ebay and gumtree for parts.

And thanks to whoever "on here" alerted the late and much missed Teenslain/Ts/>>>>> as to my shonky little build, he's just popped up on IG and offered me a Squire CV loaded scratchplate! What a gent!

Gonna order my cans from that Manchester Guitar tech today as well.
