I've also had to fight for my identity and my pride in who I am (it's still tentative tbh). Pride shouldn't be confused with superiority. I don't think I'm better than anyone else or that being English or British is great in any sense, but it is who I am.
I think you've basically just elegantly described patriotism vs nationalism.

All because we wanted the NHS to be better funded, which can be argue as patriotism to keep our free healthcare.
That’s about it, and now it’s not better funded.

Hope you come back soon. You add a lot to the discourse here.

+1 to this

Or the difference between ‘ethnic nationalism’ and ‘civic nationalism’
Anytime people mention blood and soil they’re gonna get side eye.
-
• #73907
Blood and soil is kind of a thing though, to me and others
Only not by that name pls because it really is a Nazi slogan.
-
• #73908
Fair. I'll avoid saying that. I'm aware of its far right associations and should've made that clear, it was an unplanned riff on belonging to a place. And I do love the soil.

patriotism vs nationalism
I actually don't understand. I'm not into Queen and Country or xenophobia or an insistence that we can't cooperate and collaborate with other nations.

Sorry to read this and good luck

I was specifically referring to this
I don't think I'm better than anyone else or that being English or British is great in any sense, but it is who I am.

• #73913
Is that press release also available in English?
-
• #73914
Yeah I just didn't understand whether you were saying what I said was patriotic or nationalistic and neither sound like positive associations.
Generally, I apologise for throwing Nazi slogans around. I haven't edited my post (I'm happy to) but I accept it's not cool.

Ineos Corporate Communications probably think they've already done a good job with it.

No need.

• #73917
My fault - I introduced the expression in the first place to accentuate a point. With hindsight I think it was a bit tasteless.
-
• #73918
I think it is useful to distinguish between a country and the government of a country.
I also think patriotism is generally a force for good. Isn't it the impetus to create a society you feel proud to live in?

A Patriot is someone who loves their country. A Nationalist is someone who hates everyone else’s.

For me, patriotism is a positive. Its about wanting the best for your country and the people who live there and taking pride in it being the best it can be.
As opposed to Brexit not working because Remainers didn't believe in the UK enough for it to work.

Oscar Wilde
Don't listen to him, he was well woke.

My problem with that is it seems to imply those improvements should be limited to your country. I want a planet I'm proud to live in.

planet I'm proud to live in.
I'm hoping I get a nice bunker too.

Mr Furze is apparently releasing Tunnel part 7 tomorrow night if you need inspiration
Absolutely, A really good example.
The last few years have exposed a curious fault-line in the British right.
Old-school conservatives think they stand for decency, citizenship, litter-free streets and the rule of law...
Through covid, partygate, and everything else, libertarian right are showing disdain for all these things - It must be really difficult to be a 'decent' lifelong Tory voter in these days
