Does that mean you get RRP cash or the insurance company has to source a watch? 😂
-
• #65203
Particularly as I offered him one last year ( admittedly over list at £11000, and he said he didn't want to pay a premium!)
-
• #65204
Absolutely no idea.
-
• #65205
Yeah that what I thought, I wonder given the premium over Rolex, insurance match it.
-
• #65206
Imagine trying to insure a $1M+ JPS Daytona and the insurer telling you they'd value it at RRP of $210
-
• #65207
Surely you pay the premium for whatever the market value is at the time the time the policy is taken out. Doesn't matter whether it is a watch, classic car, fine wine or whatever. If the mug paid £20k then that's what he should be insuring it for.
-

You need an agreed value where a particular item might be difficult to value based on what's available in the market at the time.
I imagine it's just as prevalent with watches as classic and retro cars. With cars, there might be a sliding scale of £50k in value from the lowest quality and highest quality of that particular model/trim out there, and only 2 for sale at the time when you need to make a claim, and if there's no prior documentation of the condition of your particular vehicle when you took the policy then it's very hard for you to prove that yours is on particular spot on the scale. There isn't a hard and fast value.

So ejay's pal could try and get a £20k agreed value, but it sounds like they might struggle.

There are online valuation services which are recognised by insurers, I’ve used Prestige Valuations. They keep bugging me to get stuff revalued because the market is so stupidly inflated.
Edit: I’ll add that it used to £40 per item and now it’s £65 which is a bit steep but also I changed our household insurance to blanket cover my stuff. And I don’t have a £20k Rolex. -

Is it worth getting specific insurance for a watch?
My home insurance covers mine, with the Pelagos listed as a specific item, but guess it doesn't cover theft if I am out of the house?
Should really look into these things.I couldn't afford to replace it tomorrow if I needed to, so maybe I should think about it.
-
• #65212
Haha! I took that personally for some reason...
-
• #65213
I used one of them. My insurer wouldn't accept. But I am in America...
-
• #65214
IIRC I went with them only because they were accepted by our insurer. I just logged into the website and my Speedy was valued at £3k in 2018 so that might need looking at.
@DethBeard My insurance definitely covers all my stuff out and about including trips abroad, worth checking your policy for sure.

So I know someone with some spare cash and wants to invest some in watches. £50k+. What would be on your shopping list?
Get name down for a bi metal Rolex to try and build from there? I mean I assume it’s virtually impossible?
-
• #65216
Rolex is over. Flik-Flaks are the next big thing in investment watches.

Randomly tried on an Oris divers 65 40mm with a bracelet. It felt great and wore very well on my wrist (didn't take a pic) but noticed that the end link doesn't quite sit flush with the lug ends... They kinda poke past the end link as it turns down around your wrist. Pedantic maybe, but it annoyed the hell outta me! But also, they are asking $3,500 AUD here, felt more like a $1500-$2,000 watch really.

Is it worth getting specific insurance for a watch?
If you've got niche outliers like that, you should either do that or use an insurer with capacity to tailor parts of the policy. It's definitely not a situation where you should assume anything.
Should really look into these things.
You really should. My nice watch used to be covered away from the home because I figured there was more chance or damage/theft. TBH I still haven't brought it back into our house, because it originally put our premium up at a point when we were trying to cut costs.
I should probably look into these things.

• #65219
I should just sell some of my watches
-
• #65220
Same, I’ve had an organise and there’s a good chunk gathering dust. Just the hassle of it.

What are peoples thoughts on microbrands? I quite fancy a watch from this local company, but it's quite expensive £747 which is getting on a bit for a Tudor homage. Is that likely just to lose all it's money and be worthless in a few years?? I'm meeting the fella who runs it later in the week to see them in the flesh and have a chat..

It doesn't seem cheap enough for a black bay knock off. (Although I guess I'm thinking of my black bay which cost about £1,800 new, I've no idea how much they cost now.)
I'd prefer something that has its own design rather than being so obvious a homage (the reason I don't like a lot of Steinharts too).
-
• #65224
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. even a Steinhart will hold it's money.. BB's make over £2k steady on ebay..
-
• #65225
Ratio of steinhart cost to original is 1:20-200 though, this is more like 1:2-3.
That he's an idiot.
Not actually sure , new for old replacement surely would mean RRP?
