The thing that I still haven’t got an answer for is why these architecture firms, engineering, construction and consulting firms, all very likely listed in London, NY, Frankfurt etc are all being let off the hook.
Likewise for other countries, it’s not like Malaysia, India, Singapore, Thailand don’t have similar issues. I guess because it’s so blatant in places like Qatar/UAE/KSA etc they’ve put a target on their own backs and with the sports washing it’s being amplified.

I reckon they're just allowed to make their own decisions and money trumps morals. I know of one oil & gas company who has voluntarily withdrawn from using services in the UAE due to human rights concerns. The thing is, they did so silently for fear of causing future political complications for themselves so even then it was only really a limited gesture and a missed opportunity to make a statement.
I think it helps that the UK is "close friends" with some of these nations too.
Edit: Even if there were formal sanctions against these nations companies would still dodge them. We saw it with Apartheid and we saw it with Russia (France / Thales dodging the sanctions in 2015). If there's money to be made, cunts will make it. I'm also not sure the public care.

Not wanting to let the off the hook, but there is a fundamental difference between companies carrying on their normal business in countries with shitty regimes and sports tournaments.
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for tournaments to grace these places with their presence. They could host them in hundreds of other countries. The same doesn't apply for an engineering company, they are businesses trying to make profit in a competitive market.
That is why sportswashing is so particularly shitty.
