Ah, that's not great. Tbh I've not really used the routing function as yet as I've only been commuting.
The breadcrumb trail on the old Elemnt was clearer.

That's pretty much my experience. I wouldn't have upgraded if I hadn't finally killed my Bolt v1 by leaving it in a dry bag full of wet laundry for a few days.
But the colour screen is enough of an improvement to outweigh the issues.
(plus I got it cheap anyway).I haven't been bothered by the off-route stuff, but then I suppose I've been using it more offroad where that's less of an issue. But a coloured route line would make a lot of sense.
Someone who worked for Wahoo once told me that the US side of the company is totally sports oriented and the fact they're great/reliable for navigation is a bit of a happy accident, which might explain why they're not very good at fixing stuff to do with maps/routing. Though that was a while ago.

I’ll keep holding out for their Uber-Wahoo Hammerhead-killer, which must be in the works, surely. Roam V2 with bigger and better screen in the same footprint would be ideal.

Why not just get a hammerhead

I ordered the little beeline V2 for the grrrl.
It looks cute and she will only use it for getting around town with directions from time to time. It doesn't have maps or anything on screen but will show the road ahead and your turn coming up.
I think it's ideal for her -

I’ve thought about it. Not sure. Android? Dunno, it doesn’t spark joy.

I was planning on getting one but they've changed the mount from the previous elastic band to one that needs zip-tieing on. I wanted it to switch between bikes (and hire bikes) so that was a deal-breaker.

I'm so tempted as it's almost everything I need, but connected GPS in this day and age seems so backwards when you can get an £80 fitness tracker with GPS built in.

You really don't notice it being an Android device

The first reviews for the Edge 1040 solar look promising. Obviously DC Rainmaker reports a shitload of software bugs but that's par for the course for Garmin Edge launches.
They reckon you can get up to 40 mins battery life from the solar per hour of riding; DC Rainmaker hasn't had that but even 15 mins would be pretty good and it can charge when on standby apparently.

Oh, I wasn't clear enough. There still is the breadcrumb trail.
This kind of situation happens when you go off route and there are no paths / ways to reroute you to so the route becomes this grayish line instead of breadcrumb trail.

Yeah I wasn't impressed with that but in the real world, my partner will never use it without her phone and she'll be finding the location using her phone maps anyway so it'll work fine.
Not for everyone though
I'm hoping it'll fit in an outfront mount -

I'm hoping it'll fit in an outfront mount
I read somewhere (either a review or on their website) that it wasn't compatible with other mounts (although it does look pretty similar)
-
• #2540
Couldn't you butcher their mount and stick a Garmin quarter turn one on it?
-
• #2541
We'll see when it arrives in a couple of weeks
It won't fit a Garmin mount because of the 4 sided fitting but hopefully a Garmin mount can be adapted to make it work
-
• #2542
There must be someone making an adapter for it I'd have thought? I remember I got an adapter my old old garmin with the slide mount that made it work with any of the quarter turn mountings.

So 1040 is solar

Don't shoot the messenger, dear.

Bit of a crosspost here.
I'm selling a Garmin GPSMap 66ST if anybody is interested https://www.lfgss.com/comments/16556234/
If no takers, i'll put in classifieds and then on eBay if no luck.
It’s all this stuff I’ve heard about. Most saying Bolt V1 is a better head unit but colour screen is nice on V2 despite usability problems. I’ll keep waiting and nurse my V1 through a few more seasons.
