  • "Le-gee under-score-ay blond-ay"

  • I did it in November, fixed, it's a lovely route.

  • Over the Severn 200k tomorrow from Evesham. 2.75AAAs

  • Second half coming back through the Cotswolds should be nice. The first bit is good too, but will be very familiar from Dean, 7X, etc.

  • I'm doing a 600km DIY on Sat/Sun from Dunkirk to a village in the middle of Germany where we are going on holiday. Route mostly flat but will take in Geraadsbergen and a few other Flanders climbs.

  • Nice one, I’m debating doing it fixed. 3500m climbing though. What gear did you run?

  • As if I can remember any rides I've done :P

The only thing I'll be like "ooh I've been here before" with will be Severn Bridge.

  • Ah, that's cool.

    So. Many. Breweries.

I'll be towing the missus around Peewhits

  • I'm trying to route the flattest 200k I can from SE London down to Eastbourne and back, so thought I'd check here for inspiration. The only chat I could find was @hippy trying to build the lumpiest version possible, whereas I need to do the opposite. I'll be riding with a group of mixed ability and worry anything much more than 2000m total climbing could end up being a loooooong day and not much fun for some. Is it doable?

  • googles maps cycling seems 67 and 2087 to Eastbourne from Brixton.

  • This was my lumpy route

  • You're going to end up crossing a lot of the High Weald which is not flat. I reckon you could probably net out at just over 2000m climbing if you finesse the route a bit.

That'll probably send you down more busier roads though, to miss the sharper elevation of the smaller lanes. So there's a balance to be struck, as they're less fun especially if you're less experienced.

This is my best shot. Go on your way to Brighton but then swing east before Turners Hill and then try and make the most of the space between the Weald and the South Downs. I can't speak for the roads down there, look a terrible tangle, but there might be some usable ideas in there. Only issue is that it's a fair bit longer than 200k, more like 250k. With some A/B road compromises in that route you could probably get it down to 225km. For the inexperienced I'd say too many hills is worse than too far.

  • Thanks all, some useful ideas.

  • my advice is to reduce elevation you want to go through edenbridge, which is the flattest area. I don't know too much about the north downs so unsure where to get out of london, but Layhams will probably have the easisest gradient ? then you want to go east of Ashdown forest (shame as it has the best vistas) and Crowborough which are on lumps, end enter eastbourne from the marshes east of Hailsham. You should be able to keep it under 100km each way, and maybe 1150/1200 elevation, depending on the start location.

  • I did this three years ago, was a lovely route, but a but far (you'll need to amend the outward leg but the return is alright). I did it on tired legs from another 200 the day before, but I was preparing for PBP, so...

  • Just another to throw into the mix, one way to Hastings but easy to chop the end and add a leg back, not too much elevation

  • 48-19 was perfect

  • Many thanks for the extra suggestions. They will be put to good use for a future ride, but for this one I’ve decided to play safe with a nice flat 220k to Rye and back.

  • Did this few years back. Awesome but damn it’s hilly

  • Some pics from Peewhits & Curlews 600k (and a DIY 100k)

That the grrl's first 600k and completes her first SR / first AAA SR (because we don't fuck around in this household :D)

  • Tips on riding over 24hrs...is this the thread for that?

  • Presumably you know to request to be added to the list? Congratulations to her.

  • Could be, this or the ultra thread.
What type of riding, fast or slow, sleeping or not, on our off road, what climate /weather?
What do you want to know?

  • 600km, on road, 40hr limit, hilly and potentially 28-30 degrees. I want to do 24 hrs before thinking about a wee kip if necessary, that would be cool.

I think the thing I'm worst at is fuelling and hydration. Now obviously we are all different but I struggle to take the time to eat properly on rides of any length tbh.
