Somewhat depressing reading:

Horrific. And it seems to open up challenges to anything not explicitly in the constitution also. The religious right will go nuts.
The Democrats must see this as a watershed moment where reform for the Supreme Court is now a must? Otherwise, it’ll be a further bonfire of human rights.

Reform of the SC has been a must even since before the Garland affair - Dems have done nothing while the Reps packed it with young partisan hacks dedicated to fighting their culture wars for them. Democracy is finished in the US, and well on its way out here.

Should have been. All we see is dragging of heels though. As it will be the case after this, I’m sure. If they're playing a long game, it's not obvious.

If this whole debacle actually goes through, will it mean the beginning of the end of the US as an allmighty superpower? I mean the end prob begun decades ago, but surely this is some kind of turning point?
-
• #16734
Oh they are properly fucked. That the Dems haven't taken their chance to stack the SC with more judges tells you they're not in the game.
Manchin and Sinema are just the tip of the infiltration iceberg - the mainstream of the Dems is more or less what the GOP was twenty years ago; orthodox deadshits without a clue; deers in the headlights.
AOC is an avenging angel, but she and her crew are just too little, too late. You can't build a bilge pump that big, that fast.

It's a little bit more subtle than made out in that tweet, text at https://twitter.com/MorganTrau/status/1532417493658177536/photo/2

I don't understand your statement but that is fucking horrible.

Seems the nuance is for athletes, child athletes, who are accused of being trans. They’ll be the ones who get pulled aside to have their genitals inspected externally and internally by strangers, probably without a parent present as seems to happen in the US.
-
• #16739
I read it as 'people accused of being trans need to provide a letter from their doctor' which isn't quite the same as being ordered to drop their pants right now.
I'm not all that bothered about organised competitive sport but if we do have different categories for male and female then trans inclusion seems impossible to do in a way that keeps everyone happy.

Yup, I think you're right. The legislation is phrased so it's the "accused" having the responsibility of finding a doctor to conduct tests rather than a mandatory forced examination.
Shit either way of course.
-
• #16741
You’re both correct re: physician’s letter and burden of proof . And it is shit either way.

Roe vs Wade overturned.
Clearly expected. But the US descent into a far-right fundamentalist state looks to be on a one-way ticket. Women's bodies seem now to be the property of the individual states?
-
• #16744
And now onto contraception, same-sex marriage and relationships. It's just as horrific as predicted.

Good job the Democrats have got a solid plan for keeping the republicans out of power: promise little and deliver nothing.

Clarence Thomas' summation said as much. Evil individual.

It seems most citizens wanted the ruling to remain (source BBC article on result). That’s democracy for you…

Women in clinics in the 13 states with trigger bans have already been told to go home.
What a tragic country the US is turning into. Women will end up in prison for having a miscarriage, as if that isn't already an awful enough situation to be in. -

Feels like a countdown to a civil war just started somewhere.

countdown to a civil war
Seems like there are a sizeable and vocal minority who want this too, unfortunately. Or at least fancy their chances.
But isn't he the smartest person in history?
