Soundcore had a 25% discount code on the Life P2 page today, so I've ordered a pair for £30 delivered.

What do people use for mp3 playback since Play was removed?
-
• #21880
I found finding something decent surprisingly awkward. I settled on this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.media.music.mp3.musicplayer&hl=en_GB
I can't remember why. -

Actually that reminded me of that set of apps, Simple apps maybe? I saw them recently looking into something else (maybe someone ditching Google apps)
Maybe this?

I use Rocket player as it has decent android auto support.

Manufacturer apps in practice, i.e. Sony Music and Samsung Music. If you don't have one of those phones, VLC is my fallback option for everything.

Ta. I've just bunged on the Simple Mobile Tools one. I rarely play stuff, just sometimes on the bike if I'm getting a bit bored.

On my Xcover there are some factory apps but there doesn't appear to me a music player, just a radio app. I figured I must've looked for a factory app when they first got rid of Play but I've just copied some fresh tunes to the phone so thinking about players again obvs

Actually belay this.
It's been getting increasingly pants for a while, with intrusive ads. I've not noticed them too much as I mainly use it with A Auto. But still...
So, I've just switched to Musicolet and it appears to be fantastic, at least on the phone. Will check out the AA support when I get home from a trip to Salzburg I am on.

Phonograph fairly decent as well for non-streamed music.

After a phone recommendation for my OH to replace their aging pixel 2.
Previously I've defaulted to Motorola for my phones, but their pixel 2 camera has generally been better and faster than my moto G7.
The two features they need are a good camera and storage. However, they have a totally unrealistic expectation of pricing as they haven't bought their own phone for nearly a decade, so they probably want to spend £100, but I think a more realistic budget is £200- £300.
Cheers

Good camera in that budget would be another Pixel
-

Cheers.
I'll see how they feel about a refurbished 5 I guess. What's the pixel 4 like?
Although I've bought a few used phones the Pixels seem to hold their value and idk if they can be bothered with another used phone.
Is there a way to check the age of a phone?

Redmi Note 10 Pro?

Cheers. I'll have a look into it.

Used it on the train home last night. Took a bit to load the stuff initially but after that seems quick and doesn't connect to fucking Facebastard or other random shit just to play mp3s.

I've been using a Pixel 4a since it came out and super happy with it. Does everything I need to without ever buldging

If they have an app for a thing that I want*, I will use them exclusively - calendar, gallery, file manager, notes, contacts, voice recording, clock, calculator.
They're particularly useful if you have a google services free phone.
* except the dialler. Which is shit. Camera is ok, but Opencamera is better, with the same degree of non-invasiveness.

Might be worth a look but it's another one of those time/benefit things which I tend to put off until I'm REALLY bored in deepest, darkest winter. I block most stuff anyway but it would be nice to not worry about it in the first place.

It's a trade off - functionality is limited, it's a faff, and shit sometimes just doesn't work.
To do it well, you are restricted to a smaller hardware selection with custom ROM nonsense.
Even then, if you install apps from Play store (using Aurora or similar) you still end up leaking data - I tried installing soundcloud recently, and then got spammed on facebook (using a restricted facebook browser that also blocks stuff) for soundcloud related things.
If nothing else, it shows just how pervasive and insidious tracking is, and how difficult it is to avoid.
I know its a few years old at this stage so it would mean getting one second hand probably but I love my s10e. Basically fits the requirement list of that smallandroidphone.com site. It has great specs and features.
